Miacatlán combines religious cultural heritage in its historic center with festive traditions, regional cuisine, and a road connection to the archaeological zone of Xochicalco. Parque Jardín and Capilla del Alma de la Virgen offer contrasting features in the town center; the market and cuisine broaden the view of the municipality.

Historic Center and Religious Heritage

Parque Jardín is located in the historic center and is a public space. Artistic and cultural events take place there on Sundays. Next to the park is Iglesia de Santo Tomás Apóstol, considered part of the local religious cultural heritage. Behind the church, by the park, is Capilla del Alma de la Virgen: a small historic pilgrimage site valued by the local community.

Festivals and Event Dates

The traditional Carnaval de Miacatlán is associated with February or March. The burning of the “bad mood” is followed by floats, comparsas, and popular music. This sets the Carnaval apart in the yearly calendar from the Sunday events at Parque Jardín: here, a seasonal window is key, while there, the events recur on a set day of the week.

Regional Cuisine and Market

Miacatlán’s municipal cuisine includes handmade gorditas filled with broad beans, beans, or pressed pork rind; they are considered local classics. Another representative dish of the municipality is goat and veal barbacoa, prepared using traditional techniques. The two dishes offer contrasting features: gordita fillings vary, while the types of meat and traditional preparation define the barbacoa. The municipality’s traditional market takes place on Tuesdays and Sundays and offers local products. On Sundays, events at the park coincide with market day; on Tuesdays, the market offers a second opportunity to shop for local products.

Another culinary tradition can be found in Palpan de Baranda, near the municipal seat: artisanal mezcal is produced there from locally grown maguey in traditional stills.

On the Way to Xochicalco

Starting at kilometer 7, Federal Highway 166 runs from Miacatlán via Xochicalco, Tetlama, and Cuentepec to the archaeological zone of Xochicalco. Located near Miacatlán, the zone is a remarkably well-preserved fortified structure dating from 650 to 900; political, religious, and commercial functions were part of its character. This gives the surrounding area a different historical scale from the town center: Xochicalco combines fortifications with multiple social functions. Check road conditions before setting out.
