Jiutepec offers several starting points for a trip: its Carnaval and religious traditions, historic squares and buildings, and natural destinations within the municipality. Choose places and experiences to suit your interests—from public life around the squares to protected landscapes and green spaces.

Carnaval and Religious Traditions

The 2026 Carnaval de Jiutepec opened the carnival season in Morelos and is considered one of the state’s most representative expressions of community identity. Its defining features include Chínelo costumes, music bands, traditional comparsas, the widows’ performance, and mojigangas. Several generations and families from the municipality take part.

The 2025 edition offers a specific glimpse of the parade: that year, the traditional Brinco del Chinelo wound through the streets of downtown Jiutepec. The festivities began on January 19 and ended on January 27. If you are planning a trip for a later date, check the current festival dates.

Religious celebrations are also among the municipality’s enduring traditions. These include the Fiesta de Santiago Apóstol and, as a separate celebration, the Fiesta del Primer Viernes de Cuaresma del Señor de la Columna de Jiutepec. Pilgrims from other municipalities come to take part in these traditions each year. The exact dates of the celebration on the first Friday of Lent vary.

Squares and History in the Municipality

Plaza Centenario and the ZĂłcalo de Jiutepec form a public square and are considered a historic legacy of the local residents. The square follows a Spanish-style urban layout and is a central setting for public life. The municipal offices and Parroquia Ex-Convento Santiago ApĂłstol stand around it, along with a century-old clock.

The parish church is a 16th-century building, dated to 1526–1529. It is part of the historic and cultural heritage of the municipality of Jiutepec. The former Hacienda San Gaspar offers another glimpse of the area’s history: its origins date back to the 17th century. Important features of its past as an agricultural complex and sugar mill have been preserved.

Nature and Green Spaces

The Parque Estatal El Texcal is located within the municipality of Jiutepec. This protected area is considered the last woodland with native vegetation in this urban area. The Laguna de Hueyapan lies within the park; it is an important wetland and a recognized Ramsar site. The lagoon is also one of the protected area’s significant natural attractions, bringing its landscape and ecological importance together in one destination.

Other green spaces offer different ways to spend time outdoors. Parque Ejidal Las Fuentes has extensive green areas, a lake with ducks, and small boats for hire. Check whether boats are currently available before visiting. Parque Solidaridad has shaded paths, children’s play equipment, and sports courts; admission is free. Check the current admission conditions before your visit.

Small Experiences and Seasonal Highlights

At the ZĂłcalo de Jiutepec, visitors can take a photo with the colorful letters and try artisanal ice cream in the central square. Check the current conditions locally. This offers a different way to experience the area from an excursion into the green spaces: here, the square and its small visitor experiences take center stage.

A seasonal nature experience was part of the 2024 Cuetlaxochitl Festival. During guided walks along the paths of Parque Estatal El Texcal, visitors could see Cuetlaxochitl in its natural habitat. Poinsettias and handicrafts were also on sale. If you would like to attend a festival, check the current dates and program.
