In Tepoztlán, archaeological history, monastery and museum culture, and nature in El Tepozteco National Park come together to offer a range of travel experiences. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether you want to focus on historic sites, exhibitions, community traditions or outdoor activities.

Archaeological History and Monastery Heritage

The El Tepozteco archaeological zone was the seat of the Tepoztlán domain. Around 1200, construction began there on houses, palaces, temples and residential complexes. Ometochtli-Tepoxtécatl, the deity of pulque, fertility and the harvest, was worshipped here. The architectural development and religious significance are therefore part of the same history of the place.

The Ex-Convento de la Natividad can also be placed within a broader heritage context: it forms part of the serial heritage site of the first 16th-century monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl. This heritage site consists of 15 components; the convent in Tepoztlán is one of them. The local monastery thus also represents a broader heritage.

From the viewing point on the upper floor of the Ex-Convento, the northern Tepozteco mountain range and the eastern valleys toward Cuautla can be seen through the arcades. A reservation may be required for access. If this view is important to your plans, check in advance whether you need a reservation.

Museums and the Landscape

The Ex-Convento houses the Museo y Centro de Documentación Histórica de Tepoztlán, with five exhibition halls. The first hall displays a scale model of the topography of the municipality of Tepoztlán. It conveys its elevations, microclimates and varied vegetation, bringing together several of the municipality's landscape features in one display.

The Museo de Arte Prehispánico Carlos Pellicer is located in the former granary of the Dominican monastery. Carlos Pellicer Cámara converted the granary's two large rooms into a museum. The two museums thus have different emphases: at the documentation center, the model offers a view of the municipality's topography and natural environment; at the Museo de Arte Prehispánico, the conversion of the former granary is part of the building's history.

National Park and Route to the Archaeological Zone

El Tepozteco National Park includes the mountain of the same name and the surrounding areas around Tepoztlán. It offers hiking, environmental education and nature photography. These activities offer different ways to experience the landscape: through physical activity, learning about the environment or nature photography.

To reach the archaeological zone from Mexico City, take the Autopista del Sol to the Oaxtepec exit, then continue via Tepoztlán. The ascent to the zone begins in the Axitla area. For planning purposes, it is helpful to think of the route and the start of the ascent as two consecutive steps.

Chinelos and Patron Saint Festivals

The Chinelo tradition in Tepoztlán emerged from the community and forms part of its collective memory. During the Tepoztlán Carnival, Chinelos appear in traditional clothing, including embroidered garments, long tunics, tall hats and masks. For travelers interested in community-rooted culture, this tradition offers another way to connect with the history of the place.

At the municipal level, patron saint festivals are held every year in each neighborhood and village in the municipality of Tepoztlán in honor of their respective patron saints; their origins date back to the colonial period. This tradition involves the municipality's neighborhoods and villages, not just the town of the same name. If you want to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the exact dates in advance.
