In Tepotzotlán, significant examples of Baroque art meet places that tell the story of the viceregal era. There are also recurring festivals and weekend markets. When planning your trip, it’s therefore worth considering both the architecture and the different event dates.

Baroque Art and the Viceregal Era

The Museo Nacional del Virreinato opened on September 1, 1964, following restoration work. It was intended to house, preserve and interpret the historical and cultural heritage of the viceregal era. The museum also features 18th-century Baroque retablos from the Church of San Francisco Javier. In Tepotzotlán, you can therefore explore both the museum’s history and artworks from the local church.

The Templo de San Francisco Javier dates back to 1682. Its complex includes the adjoining chapels of Casa de Loreto, Camarín de la Virgen and Relicario de San José. Its façade is considered one of the finest examples of 18th-century New Spanish art and is designed in the Mexican Baroque, or Churrigueresque, style. This makes the temple a notable landmark for anyone interested in the architecture of this era.

The Plaza de la Cruz offers a different perspective: its historical significance lies in the stone-carved atrium cross depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The temple façade and the cross in the plaza thus showcase different forms of religious art that shape a visit beyond any one building.

Seasonal Festivals

Tepotzotlán’s Ofrenda Monumental for Día de Muertos takes place from October 31 to November 4. For more than 20 years, a monumental offering has been set up in the church atrium, and the graves in the cemetery are decorated. If you’re planning a trip specifically for this occasion, check the current dates and arrangements before you travel.

Pastorelas are held in December at the Hostería del Convento. It is part of the same complex as the Templo de San Francisco Javier and the Museo Nacional del Virreinato. Since the current schedule depends on when you plan to visit, it’s a good idea to check the municipal program before you travel.

Another date on the annual calendar is June 29, when the Fiesta del Apóstol San Pedro takes place in the town center. The festival includes charreadas, musical performances and a traditional procession as part of the saint’s novena. Details can change from year to year, so check the current municipal program before your visit.

Weekend Markets and Walks

On weekends, small markets and food stalls line the streets of Tepotzotlán. Carpets and paintings are also sold there. A weekend visit offers a different perspective from the historic buildings. Individual vendors and the weekend program may change.

Tepotzotlán’s green parks are also suitable for walks. If you plan to visit a particular park, check the current access conditions, as these may change. Alongside the cultural attractions, walks are another way to spend your time here.

Plan Your Stay Around the Dates

When planning your hotel stay, there are several travel windows to consider: the Ofrenda takes place in late October and early November, the Pastorelas in December, and the Fiesta on June 29; markets are held on weekends.
