Temoaya can be explored through several clearly distinct cultural themes: Santiago Apóstol on the main square, the traditional Sunday Tianguis, and Otomí carpet weaving in the municipality. There is also a cultural museum and activities at Parque Estatal Centro Ceremonial Otomí in the surrounding area. For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between these locations: some attractions are in the municipal seat, while others are elsewhere in the municipality or nearby.

Santiago Apóstol and the Main Square

The 18th-century Santiago Apóstol temple stands on the north side of Temoaya’s main square. Its main portal is described as one of the most interesting in this region of Estado de México. Its noted features include the materials used, its Indigenous craftsmanship, Corinthian capitals, and its state of preservation. Another detail described is a depiction of the Apostle Santiago on the upper part of the tower. These features contribute to the portal being described as one of the most interesting in the region of Estado de México.

Sunday Traditions and Carpet Weaving

The traditional Sunday Tianguis preserves pre-Hispanic elements, including barter and the traditional clothing worn by the Otomí women who take part. Sunday is an essential part of this tradition; if the market is one of your travel interests, you can plan your stay accordingly.

Carpet weaving takes visitors to two different locations in the municipality. In San Pedro Abajo, 2nd Section, the Sociedad Cooperativa de Tapetes Anudados a Mano attracts visitors who want to learn how this craft is practiced. In San Pedro Arriba, Temoaya, Tapetes Temoaya is a family business. Since 1969, it has preserved the traditional weaving of Otomí carpets, passed down through generations. The craft sites can therefore be distinguished by location and type of operation: a cooperative in one place, and a family business preserving a weaving tradition since 1969 in another.

Culture and Activities in the Surrounding Area

Museo de la Cultura Otomí is located at Parque Estatal Centro Ceremonial Otomí, in the surrounding area of Temoaya. The park is also home to Salón del Consejo Supremo, a replica of a place where the Otomí held religious and civic gatherings. Quetzalcóatl represents the Nahuatl influence. The park is therefore a cultural destination in its own right, outside the municipal seat.

Visitors can hike, cycle, camp, and take landscape photographs at Parque Estatal Centro Ceremonial Otomí. The options combine activities on foot or by bike with camping and photography.

Two other names also correspond to different locations. Monumento La Tejedora is listed among the attractions of the municipal seat of Temoaya. In the municipality, in Jiquipilco el Viejo, Parque ecoturístico Llano del Rayo is listed as a day-trip destination. Feria Patronal Temoaya 2025 opened at Plaza Cívica Miguel Hidalgo with artistic and cultural activities.

Plan Your Stay

When searching for a vacation rental, you can first decide which focus you want your trip to have: the temple and Tianguis in the municipal seat, Otomí handicrafts at the locations mentioned in the municipality, or culture and activities in the surrounding area. This overview can help you incorporate Temoaya’s different themes into your travel plans.
