In the central district of Técpan De Galeana are Plaza Alameda Hermenegildo Galeana and Iglesia San Bartolomé Apóstol, two important local landmarks. Nearby, Sierra Tecuani adds nature and trails in a protected area to the cultural focus.

Landmarks and Local History

The connection to Hermenegildo Galeana is evident in several places: the Plaza bears his name, and monuments to him stand at the entrance to the municipal seat and in its main square. Casa de María Bello and Templo de El Campanario are also among the sights in Técpan De Galeana. The first power station to supply the population was located in the Casa.

Cultural Events Throughout the Year

Two dates are useful for planning cultural activities. Hermenegildo Galeana’s birthday is celebrated on April 13. The Feria de Tecpan also traditionally begins on this date; check in advance whether it will take place in your travel year and what program is planned. The festival honoring Saint Bartholomew is celebrated on August 24. If you would like to include either event in your trip, confirm the latest program information in advance. In April, the birthday and the traditional start of the Feria fall on the same date; the Bartholomew festival follows just over four months later.

Sierra Tecuani and Its Surroundings

Sierra Tecuani can be reached by private vehicle via the Acapulco–Zihuatanejo National Highway. There are trails and guided tours within the protected area. Representative species of the Sierra include the jaguar, margay, and river otter. If you would like to combine this with the landmarks in the main town, plan the drive as a separate part of your stay and check the latest information about trails and guided tours in advance.

Destinations in the Wider Municipality

Outside the town center, Laguna de Nuxco, Playa Michigan, Piedra de Tlacoyunque, and Puerto Escondido (Puerto Vicente Guerrero) are among the municipality’s main tourist attractions. Plan the trip to each destination separately before including several of them in a single-day itinerary.

Playa Ojo de Agua, in the Bahías de Papanoa area, is also within the municipality. In October 2024, there were restaurants and hotels there; the enramadas and restaurant-boutiques served dishes made with fresh seafood. Specific businesses and their operating conditions can change; check the latest information before planning.

In 2020, there were hotels and taxis in the main town. Check current hotel options for your travel dates; if you depend on taxis, also confirm their availability.
