In Guerrero, different travel interests come together: archaeological sites and museums tell stories of history and culture, while lagoons and coastal towns shape nature experiences. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first consider which of these perspectives you want to define your stay.

Archaeology and History in Guerrero

At Tehuacalco, residents observed the stars to calculate the time as well as the length of the year and its seasons. Soledad de Maciel also combines archaeological significance with specific features of the site: the ancient city is characterized by river stone and clay. Its partially excavated ball court may be one of the largest in Mesoamerica. You can reach the site from the Acapulco–Zihuatanejo federal highway via the Petatlán–San Jerónimo turnoff and then a local road. Road conditions can change; check the route before setting out.

In Acapulco, Fuerte de San Diego was completed in April 1617. After an earthquake in 1776, it was rebuilt; it was completed again in 1783. The Museo Histórico de Acapulco is located inside the fort. Its themes include the port’s early history as well as stories and legends from the era of the Manila galleons. The history of the fortress and the stories from the galleon era thus offer different perspectives on the historic port.

The Museo Regional de Guerrero is located in Chilpancingo in a building constructed in 1902 that served as the Government Palace and is considered the city’s only officially registered historic monument. The museum opened to the public in March 1987. Topics covered include Guerrero’s geography, the pre-Hispanic era, Spanish rule and the struggle for independence. Other subjects include the pursuit of political and territorial autonomy, social struggles in the south, and economic activities and cultural expressions.

Ixcateopan was the first zone of historic monuments to be declared in Mexico. The historic center is paved with obsidian; the Church of Santa María Asunción was said to house the remains of Cuauhtémoc. Los Tepoltzis offers a different archaeological perspective: it is a small ceremonial center on hilltops near Tixtla. Surviving stone masks and figurines testify to the stoneworking skills of its inhabitants. The site is temporarily closed at present. Grutas de Cacahuamilpa National Park encompasses one of Mexico’s most impressive and most visited cave systems, as well as geological formations.

Lagoons, Coast and Activities

At Pie de la Cuesta, a tropical lagoon ecosystem and lush mangrove zone shape the landscape; this includes Laguna de Coyuca. Visitors can take flat-bottomed boat trips on the lagoon and observe the natural surroundings. This is a different kind of nature experience from the Acapulco coast: at La Quebrada, local divers leap from heights of more than 45 meters into a narrow sea passage between dramatic cliffs.

Playa Bonfil has its own distinct character, too. It is home to Acapulco’s largest turtle conservation camp. At the same time, it is a meeting place for surfers looking for challenging waves and spectacular sunsets. Lagoon trips, cliffs and surf beaches thus represent different highlights among Guerrero’s coastal and nature experiences.

Getting There and Choosing Accommodation

Acapulco can be reached via the Autopista del Sol, as well as by air and sea. By contrast, the described route to Soledad de Maciel follows the Acapulco–Zihuatanejo federal highway, a turnoff and a local road. These details show different ways to reach specific places, not a single route through the region.

Tailor your search for hotels in Guerrero to the focus of your trip: would you like to center it on historic sites and museums, or are you especially interested in lagoons, mangroves and coastal experiences?
