Rancho Nuevo de la Cruz combines a precisely dated local history with cultural connections from different years. Anyone interested in the cultural identity of the town will find both a historic commemoration and links to music and cultural programs.

Local History and Cultural Connections

The ejido was handed over on January 23, 1936. In its report on the 2025 commemoration, the municipality stated that the event had been commemorated for 40 years. The two time references describe different things: 1936 is the date of the handover, while the four decades refer to the duration of the commemorative practice as stated in 2025.

The Semana Cultural de Abasolo also connects Rancho Nuevo de la Cruz with individual cultural programs. In 2025, the town was one of the Semana’s first rural venues; the storytelling cycle “Voces de Mamá: Historias que inspiran” was presented there. This connection brings a specific storytelling event together with the town’s name.

At the 2026 Semana Cultural de Abasolo, participants in an Arabic dance workshop from Rancho Nuevo de la Cruz performed. The workshop was led by Melanie Yamile Miranda Rivera. The connection to the town here is the participants’ place of origin; their performance was part of the Semana Cultural de Abasolo.

Another cultural connection is the Norteño group Los del Máximo Estilo, which hails from Rancho Nuevo de la Cruz. In 2023, the group performed at the Expo Feria Abasolo. Together, these examples show different aspects: the local origins of a music group, the commemoration of a historic event, and cultural contributions to individual programs.

Abasolo as a Distinct Cultural and Historical Context

In the broader Abasolo travel area, the Zona Arqueológica Peralta is a distinct archaeological attraction. The site lies east of the municipality of Abasolo and comprises 20 buildings, extending from the summit of the hill of the same name to lower-lying areas near the river. Peralta features six of the eight different forms of hilltop and sunken courtyard architecture.

An asphalt road leads east from Abasolo; via the rancherías of San Isidro, La Peña, and Rancho Seco, it is 13 kilometers to the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta. Since road conditions can change, it’s best to check them before setting out.

Other historical connections can be found in the center of Abasolo. The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz is considered the municipality’s most important church and was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The historic center is also home to two significant monuments in honor of Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of the Nation.

The stele known as the Estela de la Libertad is one of 262 Cabezas de Águila in Mexico. It marks an important point on the Ruta de Hidalgo, which commemorates the beginning of the struggle for independence from 1810 to 1811. The stele is located in Abasolo because Miguel Hidalgo was baptized there. Thus, in the broader Abasolo travel area, archaeological architecture and the commemoration of Hidalgo stand side by side as distinct historical perspectives.
