Abasolo brings together archaeological traces at Peralta, sites of remembrance in the historic center, and cultural traditions throughout the year. This blend is especially tangible at two places: the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta stretches from the top of a hill to lower-lying areas near the river; at the Museo Miguel Hidalgo, archaeological finds are displayed alongside a keepsake honoring its namesake. You can shape your stay around your interest in archaeology, history or seasonal experiences.

Peralta: Architecture and Location of the Archaeological Zone

The Zona Arqueológica Peralta lies east of the municipality of Abasolo and comprises 20 buildings. They extend from the top of the hill of the same name to lower-lying areas near the river. Its architecture includes six of the eight distinct forms of mound and sunken-courtyard architecture. Peralta can therefore be explored not only through individual structures: the variety of its architecture is also part of the zone’s archaeological character. The two excavated and restored buildings, La Mesita and El Divisadero, are considered suitable for public visits. Check current access before visiting. A municipal report from March 2025 describes visits at the equinox as an annual tradition, with hundreds of visitors expected.

Getting There from Abasolo

An paved road leads east from Abasolo; the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta is 13 km away via the rancherías of San Isidro, La Peña and Rancho Seco. The directions identify both the settlements along the route and the distance. As road conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Historic Center and Sites of Remembrance

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz is the principal church in the municipality of Abasolo and was built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The church was the setting for the unveiling of the first commemorative plaque on the Ruta Histórica de la Cristiada, as part of the centennial of the Cristero War. The historic center is also home to two important monuments honoring Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. A sculpture of Don Miguel Hidalgo was installed on Plaza Constitución in December 1960.

The stele known as the Estela de la Libertad is one of Mexico’s 262 Cabezas de Águila. It marks an important point on the Ruta de Hidalgo, which commemorates the beginning of the 1810–1811 independence struggle. The stele is located in Abasolo because Miguel Hidalgo was baptized here. At the Museo Miguel Hidalgo in the center of Abasolo, you can see the only certified replica of the baptismal font in which Hidalgo was baptized. The museum also preserves archaeological objects from the Peralta and La Mina zones, dating from 300 to 900 AD.

Traditions and Cultural Events

Near Christmas, families visit El Nacimiento Viviente in the atrium of the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Various groups portray scenes from the biblical story. At the Feria de la Cocina Tradicional in the Zona Arqueológica de Peralta, a variety of traditional dishes were prepared, with cooks preserving recipes passed down through generations. A municipal report dated May 8, 2026, also describes the opening of the 50th Semana Cultural de Abasolo, featuring artistic performances, music and a celebration of the community’s talent. The reports highlight different cultural themes: religious scenes at Christmas, culinary traditions passed down over generations, and a program of music and performances.
