Champotón combines churches and a historic fortification in town with coastal destinations and nature experiences in the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether local history, the coast or excursions will be the main focus of your stay. The different destinations offer different points of interest—from a centrally located place of worship to a zip line over a cenote.

Churches and History in Champotón

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in the center is an 18th-century Franciscan church. Its façade includes the main building and a bell tower; inside are several old images. The building’s design and images draw attention to different aspects of the church. The Iglesia de la Candelaria, dating from the late 19th century, offers a later point of reference.

The Baluarte de San Antonio is also among Champotón’s historic sights. The fortification is also known as Castillo de Moch-Cohuo. Its history goes back to the period when Campeche was plagued by piracy. The church and the Baluarte thus tell different chapters of local history: one is a Franciscan church, while the other is a fortification from an era shaped by piracy.

Coast, River Mouth and Local Cuisine

Boca del Río is a large beach area at the mouth of the Champotón River, right at the entrance to the city. It is a recreational area for the residents of Champotón. During beach season, major music events are held at a palapa to entertain beachgoers. As the program is seasonal and may change, check current dates if you would like to plan your trip around an event.

About 15 kilometers south of Champotón, an extensive sandy beach area with a turtle camp begins at Punta Xen. Check locally to see whether the camp is operating. Boca del Río and Punta Xen thus offer two different coastal settings: the beach at the river mouth by the city entrance and the sandy beach farther south at Punta Xen.

Local cuisine may also play a role in planning your trip: Pan de Cazón is considered a typical and emblematic dish of Champotón. Together with the churches and the coast, it offers several themes around which to plan a stay, without making them all the same focus.

Nature Experiences in the Surrounding Area

In nearby Miguel Colorado, visitors can glide on a zip line across the entire diameter of a cenote. There are also several viewpoints prepared for visitors, from which they can observe the local wildlife. The two activities have different focuses: the zip line passes over the cenote, while the viewpoints are for wildlife observation. Check locally on the availability of the zip line and access to the viewpoints. Miguel Colorado is about an hour from Champotón.

Another natural feature is the Champotón River, which runs through the municipality among mangroves. Boat trips on the river are recommended for both birdwatching and sport fishing. This river experience is in the municipality of Champotón, so it offers a different focus from the coastal destinations right at the entrance to the city or farther south.

Waterfront Promenade and Practical Information

The Mirador Turístico de Champotón is considered a municipal attraction and forms part of the tourist view of the waterfront promenade. In July 2021, it was closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If you plan to visit the Mirador, check current access before your visit.

The river activities take place in the municipality. Consider which themes you would like to combine during your stay and which destinations you would treat as separate excursion options. This lets you tailor your hotel search to your interests without committing to a set route.
