Veliuona combines a history of castles dating back to 1291 with a historic church, a manor park and a cycling route that reaches the town. The Panemunių Regional Park’s contribution to landscape and cultural heritage extends across the wider region.

Castles, negotiations and two hills

Junigeda Castle stood on the Gedimino Kapas hillfort and was built in 1291; it was later called Veliuona Castle. Negotiations with the Teutonic Order over Samogitia took place at Veliuona Castle. The town’s history is therefore also connected to a specific political issue. Ramybės Hill is another hillfort site and an archaeological monument of national significance, dating from the 13th to the 15th century. The date range for Ramybės Hill spans several centuries, while the year 1291 is given for the castle on Gedimino Kapas. This distinction helps differentiate the two sites and their respective historical contexts.

Church, cultural assets and churchyard

The Church of the Assumption of Mary is one of Lithuania’s oldest churches and preserves many movable cultural assets. The remains of the folklorist and priest Antanas Juška and his brother Jonas Juška are in the churchyard. Here, church history and movable cultural heritage meet the memory of the two brothers. The church and churchyard thus offer different ways to explore the town’s history.

The regional museum in Zaleski Manor

The Veliuona Regional History Museum is housed in Zaleski Manor, an early 19th-century palace considered a neoclassical architectural monument. There, the museum presents Valentino Gerulaitis’ exhibition “LDK Veliuona” on the area’s history. The architecture and exhibition offer two distinct points of entry: the palace’s architectural history and the regional history explored in the exhibition. If you are visiting specifically for the exhibition, check its current status and the museum’s location in advance.

Cycling route and the wider region’s landscape

In the wider region, PanemuniĹł Regional Park preserves the landscape of the lower Nemunas, its natural ecosystem and its cultural heritage. One specifically named route option is the 31-kilometre PanemunÄ— Cycling Route: it connects visitor destinations on the right bank of the Nemunas and leads to Veliuona, where there are numerous visitor attractions. The regional landscape and a specific route can therefore be considered as different planning perspectives. Local trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Getting there and choosing accommodation

The Kaunas–Šilutė road runs through Veliuona and helps with navigation when travelling to the town. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can organise the themes for your stay: the castle, church and museum anchor the cultural history in the town, while the cycling route and regional park extend the focus to visitor destinations and landscapes in the wider region. This can help you decide whether to focus mainly on Veliuona’s history or also include the route and the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
