In Lumpėnai, historical traces lead from the earliest written mentions to the Lithuanian-language press of Lithuania Minor. The village’s history also includes a long school tradition and an old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery. Rambyno kalnas, an important site in Lithuanian cultural memory, lies south of the village. Lumpėnai is nine kilometres east of the town of Pagėgiai, on the Jurbarkas–Šilutė highway. The Lumpė river flows through the village and belongs to the Nemunas river basin; the place name is also derived from the stream Lumpė, called Lompe in German.

School, press, and local history

Lumpėnai was first mentioned in writing in 1536 and first marked on maps in 1665. The village’s first school opened in 1739 and provided primary education. In 1944, classes began to be taught in Lithuanian; the school remained in operation until 1983.

Enzys Jagomastas (1870–1947) is also associated with Lumpėnai. He was from the village, worked as a publisher, editor, and in the press, and was active in public life. His contribution to the development of the Lithuanian-language press in Lithuania Minor makes the village’s history interesting also to readers interested in language and publishing.

Another place of remembrance is the old Evangelical Lutheran cemetery, which is no longer in use. There, symbolic krikštai mark the burial places of the deceased. Many Lietuvininkai who lived from the late 19th to the early 20th century are buried in the cemetery. A monument erected in 2008 commemorates the parents of Enzys Jagomastas; it does not establish that they were buried there. The local history museum exhibition “Šviesos kampelis” opened next to the library on 6 March 2020.

Rambyno kalnas and the surrounding area

Rambyno kalnas lies south of Lumpėnai, in the territory of the Lumpėnų seniūnija, outside the village itself. Its significance to Lithuanian cultural memory adds a distinct point of reference to the village’s history. The Rambynas Regional Park visitor centre is also nearby, in Bitėnai. Its exhibition covers the history of the Rambynas area, crafts, the way of life of the Lietuvininkai, notable local figures, and the wildlife and plant life of the surrounding forests and meadows. The centre also hosts events and exhibitions.

These places are not all in Lumpėnai itself: the visitor centre is in Bitėnai, and Rambyno kalnas is south of the village. If you are mainly interested in the village’s history, focus on the school, cemetery, museum exhibition, and Jagomastas; the visitor centre provides additional insight into topics from the surrounding area.

Planning your stay

The administrative building of the Lumpėnų seniūnija at Rambyno g. 22 in Lumpėnai is recommended as the starting point for the historical walk. Check the directions locally before relying on them. The local administration, a library, a medical station, a forestry administration, and a shop are among the facilities listed in Lumpėnai. If you need any of these services for your plans, check that they are currently available before relying on them.

This makes it easy to set a clear focus for your trip: the village’s school and press history, the cemetery’s memorial culture, or the additional exhibition topics at the visitor centre in Bitėnai.
