Gudeliai is located on Lake Ivoniškis and combines its connection to the water with a clearly defined local history. The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel brings together a distinctive exterior design and a three-aisled interior; there is also a former manor estate and a monument to Lithuanian partisans in the centre of the village. For trip planning, this offers a choice of different focuses: architecture and memorial sites on the one hand, and the lakeshore on the other.
Church, Manor Estate and Local History
The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel is located at Vytauto g. 8. It has a rectangular ground plan, two towers, an apse and a small turret. Inside, pillars separate the three aisles. This makes it possible to consider the building’s exterior form and the layout of its interior as two distinct aspects of the church’s architecture.
The former Ivoniškis (Gudeliai) manor is associated with the 16th century and the Tiškevičiai counts. The grounds of the former manor include four outbuildings and two structural remains; they have been provisionally classified as cultural heritage. The connection with the 16th century and the counts provides a historical context for the manor’s history, while the classification indicates that the site’s status is provisional.
There is also a monument to Lithuanian partisans in the centre of the village. It adds a distinct memorial site to the themes of architecture and manor history.
On the Shores of Lake Ivoniškis
Gudeliai is located on Lake Ivoniškis, and its shore is designated as a recreation area. A municipal description dated 17 July 2023 mentions a children’s playground and an outdoor volleyball court there. Check before your trip whether both facilities are still available. The playground and volleyball court offer different activities by the lake and provide a separate focus for planning your stay alongside the cultural sites.
Landscape and Culture in the Wider Eldership
Beyond Gudeliai, the wider Gudelių Eldership offers a different perspective. Its landscape features include the edge of Žuvintas Reserve, small lakeshores and a belt of forest; these change with the seasons. These natural attractions complement the local history and lakeshore with another explicitly regional perspective.
Festival culture is also part of the wider eldership: the Gudeliai village ensemble performs at local festivals. As its current performance schedule may change, check whether a performance is planned during your trip if you are interested.
The village of Rudėnai is in Gudelių Eldership. Its cemetery dates from the 17th century and is designated as an archaeological monument. Another historical landmark in the wider eldership is Riečiai Hillfort, also known as Gaulės Hill. It lies on the border of Alytus and Marijampolė municipalities and is dated to around a thousand years ago. These places form part of the regional context and should not be confused with attractions in the village of Gudeliai itself.
Getting There and Finding a Holiday Apartment
Roads connect Gudeliai with Igliauka and Simnas, providing two named reference points for travelling by road. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether your stay will focus primarily on the church, manor estate and lake in Gudeliai, or whether you would also like to include the landscape and cultural heritage of the wider eldership.
