Gelgaudiškis can be explored through two defining features: the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross and the manor estate and park complex on the Nemunas. Together, they reveal different sides of the town’s history: a clearly defined religious building and an extensive cultural landscape. When planning your stay, you can focus on architecture, historic park design or routes with cultural points of interest.

Manor Estate Complex, Park and Church

Gelgaudiškis Manor is a remarkable 19th-century architectural ensemble on the banks of the Nemunas. Ten buildings dating from the manor period have been preserved within the estate complex. The manor park covers 118 hectares, slopes down towards the Nemunas and was designed in the French style. Here, preserved buildings, the scale of the estate and historic park design come together. The extensive parkland adds a landscape dimension to the architectural ensemble.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Cross in Gelgaudiškis was built of brick between 1866 and 1868. It is a single-nave, Neo-Gothic church, with a tower and three turrets defining its silhouette. The church building thus differs distinctly from the estate complex, which consists of several buildings. If you are interested in architectural history, Gelgaudiškis offers both a specific church building and a larger historic ensemble to explore.

Discover the Routes and Landscape

Gelgaudiškis is located in the Panemunių Regional Park. A cultural heritage trail passes the Žvaigždė Clearing, where paths radiate in eight directions, and goes by the site of Asesoriaus Kapas. A viewpoint along the trail offers a view towards Panemunė Castle. The stops offer different points of interest: a distinctive path pattern in the clearing, a named site and a view towards the castle. These landscape features complement the manor architecture.

For cyclists, the Gelgaudiškis–Žemoji Panemunė route is one option: it is about 36 km long and runs on gravel and asphalt. Its length and surface may change due to maintenance work. Before setting out, check the current route information, especially if the surface is important to your planning.

The cycling route reaches Plokščiai after approximately 14 km from Gelgaudiškis. The Vaiguva river street and Šventauobė are located there. For route planning, the two distances offer different measures: about 14 km to Plokščiai and approximately 36 km for the connection to Žemoji Panemunė.

Carillon and Event Formats

A 36-bell carillon in the manor park is used at manor events and educational excursions; its use may vary from one event to another. Events at the manor include theatre and educational tours, manor dance lessons, educational programmes for children, dance and tasting excursions, and events of the Beatričė Festival featuring classical music. Before your trip, check which activities are taking place on your travel dates.
