White sandy beaches are among the most visited places in Palanga today. But the coastal resort also offers museums, sculptures, a historic park and a varied programme of events. When planning your trip, different interests may guide your choice: time by the sea, collections and exhibitions, or a specific event in the cultural programme.
Coast, Beach and Sea Views
The Palanga Sea Pier is 470 metres long and was built on concrete piles in 1998. In the evening, visitors can sit on benches there and watch the sunsets. BirutÄ— Hill offers a different view of the sea: it rises 21 metres above sea level. BirutÄ— Park was laid out on the grounds of the former BirutÄ— Forest and BirutÄ— Hill. The coast therefore offers more than just sandy beaches: the viewpoint and pier are other attractions.
Museums with Different Focuses
Amber is at the heart of the Palanga Amber Museum. It has one of the world’s largest collections of amber inclusions and unique amber objects, with more than 30,000 exhibits in total. Guided tours in Lithuanian, English and Russian last about an hour. As availability may change, check the latest dates in advance.
The Palanga Resort Museum preserves, researches and presents museum treasures, significant collections of Palanga’s visual heritage, and cultural treasures discovered during archaeological research in Palanga. It also features contemporary and historical exhibitions from Lithuania and abroad. The Palanga Burgomaster Jonas Šliūpas Museum, in turn, offers guided tours, educational activities and creative workshops for schoolchildren and young people.
Sculpture, Art and Special Experiences
Visitors can see 28 sculptures in Palanga Sculpture Park, which a Lithuanian art museum transferred to the Palanga municipal administration. The park’s chessboard was renovated in 2020, making it possible to play giant chess outdoors. At the Antanas Mončys Art Museum, visitors are allowed to touch the sculptures. More than 200 works are displayed on the second floor, including sculptures, drawings, graphic works, collages, pipes and masks. Together, the two places offer different perspectives on public art and on a collection that also includes unusual groups of works.
Palanga also offers walking orienteering games: participants solve riddles, discover hidden details and answer questions as they follow the route. Visitors interested in the Palanga Resort Museum will also find wide passageways and an elevator there. Check the current access conditions before your visit.
Seasonal Culture and Events
The Palanga Cultural Centre at the Palanga Kurhaus hosts more than 250 different events every year. These include concerts, celebrations of national and calendar holidays, and festivals. In summer, the BirutÄ— Park Rotunda traditionally hosts free concerts by the professional Palanga Orchestra three times a week: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. Exact dates may change; check the current schedule if a concert is a key part of your visit.
During the warmer months, the Musical Fountain entertains visitors with music, light and water; its programme and operating period may also change. The theatre hall at the Palanga Kurhaus is used by the Palanga Grubusis Theatre for performances, non-commercial films, conferences and rehearsals. The different venues and formats offer a range of reasons to plan your travel dates around the cultural programme.
Getting Around and Finding Your Way
Several cycle paths run through the resort and along the coast; together, they stretch for several dozen kilometres. As conditions on individual paths may change, check the latest information for your chosen route before setting off. On foot, Jonas Basanavičius Street provides a point of reference: it is Palanga’s central street and the main street leading to the pier.
Palanga International Airport is seven kilometres from the city centre. Flight connections and services may change; check the latest connections for your journey. This makes it possible to choose Palanga based on the interests that will shape your trip.
