Klaipeda combines maritime history with art, museums and the natural environment of the Curonian Spit. This diversity is particularly evident in Smiltynė: the part of the spit within the city limits is a recreational area with walking paths and water sports facilities. At the same time, it lies within the Curonian Spit National Park and the Curonian Spit UNESCO World Heritage Site. When planning, you can weigh up a focus on urban culture against a stay with a stronger coastal and nature connection.

Smiltynė and the Sea

The Lithuanian Sea Museum in Smiltynė includes an aquarium, exhibitions on the history of shipping, a dolphinarium, a rehabilitation center for Baltic Sea animals and a center for dolphin-assisted therapy. Its subject matter thus ranges from marine life and shipping to animal protection and therapy. This offers a different focus from the historical collections and art venues in the city. Ferries connect the mainland at Klaipėda with Smiltynė from the Old and New Ferry Terminals. If you plan to visit this part of the city, check the current ferry schedule before your trip.

A Harbor City with a Long History

The sailing ship Meridianas lies at Biržos Bridge on the Danė River and is a defining part of Klaipėda’s identity as a harbor city. The castle complex also points to the city’s maritime past: it is considered the city’s origin, and the idea to build it emerged in 1252. This refers to the beginning of a building plan, not to a single surviving year of construction. Those interested in the development of the urban area will find another historical trace at Theater Square. Its history began in 1819, after part of the castle moat had been filled in to create the New Market.

Museums for Different Interests

The Klaipėda Castle Museum displays archaeological finds, documents and city seals. Its collection also includes reconstructed 17th-century seals and archaeological objects from the castle and Old Town. The History Museum of Lithuania Minor offers a broader regional perspective: it presents the pagan and Christian cultures of the coastal region, as well as the history of East Prussia and the Klaipėda region. The museum is housed in one of the Old Town’s oldest buildings, dating from the late 18th century.

The Museum 39/45 offers a different format. It covers the Second World War in four exhibition halls and with 13 interactive stations. This makes it easy to choose between the museums based on personal interests: archaeological evidence and city seals, regional cultural history, or the history of the Second World War. If you are planning a program that includes several cultural venues, you can consider these themes alongside events in Theater Square. Concerts, events and the Sea Festival are held there; check specific dates separately for your trip.

Art in the City and Finding the Right Accommodation

Klaipėda Sculpture Park is an open-air gallery of modern Lithuanian sculpture, featuring 116 works by 67 Lithuanian artists. There is also a sculpture trail where visitors can get to know the city through art. The trail and the open-air gallery offer two different ways to experience the works: as a destination for a park visit or as part of exploring the city. Choosing a focus helps you structure your trip without having to fit every location into a single itinerary.
