A hill at the entrance to the town, an oak forest and views of the coast and mountains: the Um al-Marahim sanctuary is a distinctive cultural landmark in Miziara. Together with the very old Church of Saint Maura in the archaeological area of Rishtamout, it reveals two different facets of the local cultural heritage.

Miziara: Elevation and climate

Miziara lies about 750 metres above sea level. The climate is generally moderate. Temperatures rarely exceed 33 °C in summer, and they also rarely fall to near 0 °C. These long-term characteristics give a general impression of the town’s elevation and climate. The sanctuary itself sits on a hill amid an oak forest at the entrance to Miziara. From there, views extend both to the coast and to the mountains.

Um al-Marahim: History and design

The Sanctuary of Our Lady, Mother of Mercy, also known as Um al-Marahim, was built in 1979 by Mersal Shaghoury. Bishop Antoine Jbeir consecrated it on 6 September 1992. The complex includes a church, a tall tower and a statue of the Virgin Mary. Lush gardens adorn the sanctuary, and a large hall is intended for gatherings and events.

At the entrance, statues of Jesus and his twelve disciples stand on either side. To the left is a miniature replica of the Jordan River, depicting the baptism of Jesus. The sanctuary also has a baptismal font made of Miziara rock, where the faithful baptise their children. In this way, the complex combines visible religious depictions with a described baptismal practice. It is visited by people from the region and by foreign tourists. If you are planning a visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

The Church of Saint Maura

The very old Church of Saint Maura is located in the archaeological area of Rishtamout. Considered together, the religiously designed complex of Um al-Marahim and this old church offer different cultural points of interest. The church places that interest in an archaeological area; at the sanctuary, the focus is on its church, tall tower, statue of the Virgin Mary and other religious depictions.

Culture in the wider destination of North Lebanon

A separate look at the wider destination of North Lebanon leads to Tripoli. The city’s notable historical sights include the Madrasa al-Burtasiyya, Khan al-Khayyatin, Hammam al-Jadid, the Mawlawi Tekke and Souq Haraj. Tripoli is also known for food production, especially confectionery. Festivals are held there each year between August and September. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant edition.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Miziara, the local cultural attractions can help guide your choice of destination: Um al-Marahim combines religious architecture with baptismal practice, while Rishtamout offers a connection to a very old church. Consider which of these themes interests you most during your stay; it is best to check current visiting arrangements when planning a visit to the sanctuary.
