Lebanon has four main geographical regions arranged from west to east: the coastal plain, the Mount Lebanon range, the Bekaa Valley and the Anti-Lebanon Mountains. They differ in topography and climate. This sequence provides a useful starting point when deciding which landscape you would like to shape your stay. The geographical order explains the country’s diversity, but it is not automatically a ready-made itinerary.

Landscapes as a starting point

The dry Anti-Lebanon Mountains rise east of the Bekaa Valley and form part of Lebanon’s eastern border with Syria. Their location and dry conditions give the eastern side of the country a distinct landscape character. At the same time, the four main regions differ in topography and climate. For planning, this is one way to determine the kind of trip you want before choosing specific places to stay. If you are considering several regions, it is best to treat their geographical sequence as a guide rather than a prescribed route.

Bekaa Valley: a regional agricultural hub

The Bekaa Valley is Lebanon’s most important agricultural region. On the high plateau between the two mountain ranges, river water supports the cultivation of tomatoes, potatoes, wheat, olives and grapes, even during hot, dry summers. The contrast between the river water and the dry summer conditions shows how cultivation is connected to the landscape. This gives the valley its own agricultural dimension in your travel decision. If you would like to include landscape and regional character in your travel plans, the Bekaa offers a different focus from urban history or winter sports.

Byblos and the development of its old town

The walled old town of Byblos features medieval walls, a cathedral, a castle and a donjon. It was later transformed into a city of Ottoman character, with souks, khans, a mosque and residential houses. Its character therefore extends beyond individual landmarks: the fortifications and later urban forms are part of a shared development of the urban space. Travelers interested in architectural and urban history can make Byblos a distinct focus of their trip. The connection between individual buildings and the later transformation makes the old town a fitting choice for travelers who see historic places as more than a single attraction.

Winter sports at Mzaar Ski Resort

Mzaar Ski Resort has ski runs for different ability levels and offers skiing and snowboarding. Winter sports are therefore a clearly defined reason to travel, with planning that differs from a cultural focus such as Byblos. You can take the different ability levels into account when choosing runs. Snow and lift operations are seasonal and depend on conditions. Check conditions before your trip if you plan to time your visit around skiing or snowboarding.

Choose hotels based on your reason for traveling

The historic urban development of Byblos, the agricultural character of the Bekaa and winter sports in Mzaar offer different thematic focuses. A countrywide overview can provide an initial guide; your specific plans will depend on your own goals and chosen travel dates.
