At Slampe’s central pond, there is a bathing area with car access and a small parking lot. The Slampes Kultūras pils and the “Zelta josta” memorial stone also offer tangible points of reference for local culture and history. This raises a clear question when deciding what to focus on during your stay: would you rather explore community cultural life, local remembrance or spend time by the water?
Culture at the Slampes Kultūras pils
The Slampes Kultūras pils opened on 23 December 1978. It has 13 amateur arts groups; this number may change over time. Their members include children, young people, middle-aged adults and seniors. This means the groups span several generations. The “Pūrs” folklore group has been active since 1987. The “Zelta rudens” seniors’ association at the Slampes Kultūras pils also takes part in every event held there.
There are two ways to understand the centre: its opening date anchors its history, while its age groups and folklore group highlight specific aspects of its cultural life. If you are particularly interested in folklore, “Pūrs” offers a tangible point of connection; the seniors’ association, in turn, is linked to the centre’s events.
Remembrance at “Zelta josta”
The “Zelta josta” memorial stone was unveiled in the centre of Slampe on 14 June 2015. It bears the names of 100 residents of Slampe who were affected by the deportations of 14 June 1941 and 25 March 1949, as well as by the Holocaust. The two June dates fall on the same day of the month, but relate to different years and events: 2015 marks the unveiling, while 1941 marks one of the deportations mentioned. The date 25 March 1949 marks the second deportation mentioned.
In Latvian folklore, the belt motif “Zelta josta” symbolises protection. Two layers of meaning sit side by side here: the names and dates relate to the remembrance of those affected, while the belt motif refers to a protective symbol in folklore. This makes it possible to distinguish historical remembrance from symbolic interpretation.
Bathing area at the central pond
Slampe’s bathing area at the central pond is located by one of the village ponds, next to the Tukums–Jelgava road. It is accessible by car and has a small parking lot. On site, there is a changing cabin, two benches and waste bins. Both car access and the facilities at the pond are relevant when planning your visit. As conditions on site may change, check the situation at the bathing area before your visit.
A market at the 2025 festival
At the Slampes pagasts festival, a market for entrepreneurs, home producers and farmers selling their own produce was held next to the Slampes Kultūras pils on 2 August 2025, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The different groups of vendors give this festival day a distinct focus alongside the community cultural life at the centre. For this occasion, the market thus brought together the venue and an offering of locally produced goods.
