Rideļi can be explored through its mill history, Lake Rideļu Mill in the Kalnupe Valley and a range of activities. In addition to the Rideļu dzirnavas mill museum, there are SUP, guided hikes and an option to extend a cycling route; a pancake experience is also on offer. If you are looking for a holiday rental, it helps to decide first what matters most to you: cultural history, outdoor activities or both.

Mills, Museum and Manor

The Rideļu dzirnavas were built in 1863. Following the land reform of 1920, they came into the possession of the Kambala family; in 2002, they were included in the European Heritage of Industrial Culture. The three dates mark different milestones: construction, a change of ownership and later recognition. The mill museum is housed across three floors of the Rideļu dzirnavas. The museum also features the educational short film “No grauda līdz maizei” (“From Grain to Bread”), which explores the journey from grain to bread.

The Rideļu manor is another distinct historical landmark: it is one of four manor estates in the Sēme parish that have survived to this day. While the mill and its museum focus on industrial cultural history, the manor represents another surviving chapter in the area’s history. An interactive programme was also created when the mill museum opened, with workshops led by the miller for children, students and families.

By the Lake and on the Trails

Lake Rideļu Mill lies in the Kalnupe Valley. A dedicated SUP route on the lake passes through a reed-covered maze; arrangements must be made to use it. The lake is home to pike, perch, roach, tench and crucian carp.

TIKAI JUST offers guided hikes through the forests of Rideļi and along lakes and rivers; advance booking is required. Most TIKAI JUST routes start and finish at the Rideļu dzirnavas; advance booking is also required for these routes.

For a cycling trip, the “Over the hills and to the sea” route can be extended from Zentene through Rideļi, past the Rideļu dzirnavas, towards Engure and the sea. This extension covers 7 km of gravel road and 15 km of paved road in each direction. As road surfaces and conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting off.

The outdoor options also differ in how they need to be planned: for hikes, a guide and advance booking are important; for the cycling extension, the distance and road surfaces matter. Bear in mind that conditions can change.

A Pancake Break

The COPE café at the Rideļu dzirnavas offers a pancake experience where guests fill their own pancakes with sweet or savoury ingredients. Advance booking is required.
