The harbour of Mērsrags lies in a man-made channel between two breakwaters, providing a sheltered harbour area. Nearby, Mērsraga pludmale stretches for several kilometres. The church, lighthouse and museum add Latvian architectural and local history to the coastal theme. If you are looking for accommodation in Mērsrags, you can think of the town in terms of the coast, nature watching and culture.
Harbour, Canal and Nature Park
Mērsrags is located in Engures ezera dabas parks Nature Park. The Engures–Mērsraga Canal, dug in 1842, runs through the town. The Yacht Club Kurland is located in the harbour. It has a permanent berth, modern lighting, electricity and water connections, and a well-equipped service building with a sewage pumping station. The harbour entrance and the club's facilities offer a concrete insight into the town's maritime infrastructure.
Beach, Walks and Birdwatching
The several-kilometre-long Mērsraga pludmale is suitable for swimming and sunbathing. You can walk along the beach and through the pine forest. A wooden boardwalk built in 2018 leads from the car park to Mērsraga pludmale. At Mērsraga zemes rags, Velna akmens lies about 50 metres from the shore. The beach, forest and named coastal landmark offer different ways to explore the landscape of Mērsrags.
The birdwatching tower offers wide views of coastal meadows and grassland grazed by cattle. Mērsrags is considered an excellent place to observe waterbirds; migratory birds, songbirds and birds of prey gather there. The view from the tower focuses on the landscape, while birdwatching makes Mērsrags as a whole a destination in its own right.
Church, Lighthouse and Local History
The present wooden building of Mērsraga Evanģēliski luteriskā baznīca was built in 1809 and completely rebuilt in 1896. The church is considered one of the oldest wooden churches in Latvia. Several state-protected cultural monuments are located inside the church, including J. F. Sartoris's altarpiece “Christ with the Child”, J. Pipars's 1793 painting “Jesus Saves the Drowning Peter”, an organ from the second half of the 19th century and a chandelier from the end of the 19th century. The tower of the Mērsrags Lighthouse is also a state-protected architectural monument of significance.
Muzejs „Saieta nams“ is housed in a surviving building erected in 1811, considered the oldest residential building in Mērsrags. Part of the exhibition focuses on old Latvian writing, property and magical symbols. An extensive collection shows these symbols on tools and household items. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit the museum, arrange your visit before travelling.
