Pastende brings together several layers of history: the manor house, with parts dating from the 17th and 18th centuries; the story of a former bridge over the Stende; and cultural life at the Culture House. This gives you a choice of different focal points when planning your visit: architectural history, creative activities or a motorcycle exhibition recommended as a stop on a cycling route.

Pastende Manor: Manor House History and School Use

Pastende Manor was built mainly in the 18th century; the oldest part of the residential building dates from the 17th century. These details refer to different parts of the building’s history: the earlier date applies to the oldest part of the building, not to the main construction phase of the entire house. The German baronial von Hahn family (1476–1920) created the estate’s splendour, including its park plantings. The manor house and its park design are therefore both part of the area’s history.

The Pastende Primary School has been located in the main building since 1945. The history of the manor house and an ongoing school use dating back to 1945 thus come together in the same building. Those interested in historic buildings will find both an early building phase and a clearly identified later period in its history of use.

The Bridge on Skolas iela

A bridge over the Stende River once stood on Skolas iela in Pastende. The former structure had been built more than 150 years ago, but was completely demolished. A new arched stone-wall bridge made of natural fieldstones was built in its place; its structure includes a gravel filling in lime mortar. The age of more than 150 years therefore refers to the former bridge, not to the replacement standing today.

This distinction makes the bridge’s history especially vivid: the focus here is not on one and the same structure spanning centuries, but on an old crossing and its replacement. The arched shape and the materials used are specific features of the new bridge. The bridge adds a different kind of architectural history to Pastende’s story of the manor house—one shaped by demolition, replacement and the design of a new structure.

Creative Groups and Exhibitions at the Culture House

There are 14 creative groups active at the Pastende Culture House. Exhibitions change regularly in the exhibition hall, and handicrafts are also shown regularly in the fireplace hall. These works are by members of the applied arts collective or by invited master craftspeople. The same building thus brings together different forms of culture: active groups, changing exhibitions and displays of handicrafts.

This offers a different way to explore Pastende than its manor house and bridge history. While building phases and structural changes are the focus there, the Culture House is about creative groups and different kinds of exhibitions. If you would like to explore culture beyond historic architecture, these themes offer an additional perspective on Pastende.

Motorcycle Exhibition as a Possible Cycling Stop

A motorcycle exhibition in Pastende displays 29 motorcycles manufactured from 1925 onwards. The cycling route also recommends the Motosporta Exhibition in Pastende as a stop. This gives you a specific point of interest on a cycling trip: the route explicitly names the exhibition as a possible stop. Check the current visiting options for the Motosporta Exhibition before your arrival.

You can choose among these different themes according to your interests: the manor house and bridge offer different perspectives on architectural history, the Culture House features creative groups and exhibitions, and the cycling route adds its own highlight with a recommended stop.
