In Ogre, traces of a former spa town meet architecture, public art and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. When planning your stay, you can choose a focus: the town’s history and buildings, trails and landscape, or sporting activities. Travel from Riga is also possible by intercity bus and train.
Spa history and architecture in Ogre
The Ogre History and Art Museum offers guided tours led by museum specialists at two locations: 36 Brīvības Street and 2 Brīvības Street. A tour of the permanent exhibition “Pietura Ogre” traces the development of the former spa town. Its beginnings date back to the opening of the Riga–Dinaburg railway line in 1861; the spa town flourished in the 1930s. “From bank to museum” is another permanent exhibition at the museum. Check booking requirements and exhibition availability before your visit.
Brīvības Street also offers a glimpse into the town’s architectural history. It is known for examples of architecture from the 1920s and 1930s, including buildings by Vladimirs Šervinskis, Indriķis Blakenburgs, Eduards Smurģis and Dāvids Zariņš. Tornis Ogre is another chapter in the town’s architectural heritage and includes a restored 20th-century water tower. It had been out of use since the late 1980s.
Ogre Central Library combines architecture with a visitor experience. It is currently the largest public wooden building in Latvia and belongs to the category of passive or zero-energy buildings. Visitors can view exhibitions there, and guided tours can be booked by arrangement.
Bridges, promenade and public art
The arched pedestrian bridge over the Ogre River was built in 1966. It is 94 metres long and 4.5 metres wide, connecting the centre of Ogre with Pāroge. The sculpture “Mīlestības koks” stands by the Loka Bridge on the side of the Ogre open-air stage. The two landmarks bring different accents to the public space: the bridge through its dimensions and history, and the sculpture as a work of art in a named location.
A 3.5-kilometre route along the Ogre River is described for those planning a specific walk. It follows the Krasta Promenade and J. Čakstes Avenue and crosses the river at two points: via the arched bridge and the new pedestrian bridge. The Krasta Promenade is a recreational and walking area for locals and visitors, as well as a popular venue for concerts and festivals. It also includes a 100-metre wooden pedestrian bridge over the river, which is dismantled in winter. When planning, check event dates and the seasonal restriction affecting this bridge.
Landscape and outdoor activities
Ogres Zilie kalni Nature Park covers 312 hectares. In summer, its network of trails offers opportunities for Nordic walking and cycling. A 30-metre-high observation tower offers views over Ogre and the surrounding green woodlands. Another natural feature is the protected Ogre dolomite outcrops: this natural monument preserves a site where remains of prehistoric marine invertebrates and fossil fish have been found.
“Zilie kalni – orientējies” offers another way to find your bearings. The facility has 60 permanent checkpoints with QR codes in the area between Ogre and Ikšķile, and is intended for year-round use. The two activities therefore differ by season: the nature park’s trail network is described as a summer option, while the orienteering facility can be used throughout the year.
Sports and activities for different interests
The Jaunogre public recreation area has outdoor exercise equipment and activity facilities for children and teenagers. Ogre Skatepark covers more than 300 square metres and has five different demountable wooden ramp structures. These are some specific features for visitors who would like to include outdoor activity in their stay.
Džungļu parks is a 500-square-metre children’s entertainment centre. Its attractions include a large, three-storey obstacle maze and an inflatable obstacle course measuring 12 by 4.5 metres. Ogre Basketball Club is based at Arena Ogre, which also hosts indoor football matches. As the event programme may change, it is worth checking dates in advance.
When choosing a hotel in Ogre, first set your travel dates according to the experiences that matter to you: summer trails in the nature park, year-round orienteering checkpoints or an event. Check the intercity bus and train timetables for travel from Riga. This lets you plan your stay around the dates you will actually visit, without having to turn the different activities into a fixed itinerary.
