Madliena offers several ways to explore history and landscape: a monument in the town, a birch grove associated with the municipal school, and archaeological and museum sites nearby. There is also an oak grove whose layout and installation form a subject in their own right. This lets you distinguish between remembrance, school history, the archaeological past and a landscaped setting, rather than treating all the destinations as similar attractions.
Memorial Sites and History
In Madliena, a monument commemorates the sons of the Madliena parish who fell in the First World War and the Latvian War of Independence. Another historical trace leads to the municipal school: the Vadoņa Birch Grove was established near the school in 1936 by its pupils. Two different forms of local remembrance therefore stand side by side: the monument honours the fallen, while the grove is associated with a community planting carried out by the pupils.
Nearby is Plāteres pilskalns, an archaeological monument of national significance. Individual finds suggest that the site was inhabited from the 5th to the 13th century. This date range is based on the interpretation of these finds. The focus at the hill is therefore on its archaeological classification, while the monument and birch grove are directly connected with the history of the municipality and the school.
Also nearby is the local history museum “Bet tā bija!” in a former primary school building constructed in 1868. The museum offers guided tours of Madliena’s sights; if a tour fits your plans, confirm its availability before your trip. The Vērene fire lookout tower is also nearby. It is the only fire lookout tower in Latvia clad with split wooden shingles. While the focus at Plāteres pilskalns is on its archaeological classification, the tower stands out for its distinctive construction.
Oak Grove and Landscaped Setting
In Madliena, the Latvijas pagastu ozolu birzs offers a different emphasis. It was planted with 453 oak saplings. A network of paved and gravel paths is designed to symbolically evoke tree roots; this motif continues in a tree trunk with seven acorn-shaped surfaces. The design of the paths is therefore itself part of the grove’s theme. The grove also includes the installation “Imanta Ziedoņa debess vērošanas gulta”, from which visitors can observe clouds and stars. The landscaping at ground level and observation of the sky are thus two distinct aspects of the site.
A Festival Programme as a Time-Specific Reference
At the 2026 “Madlienas pagasta svētki” festival, a procession went from the “Otrās mājas” association to the Madliena open-air stage. Unlike an individual monument or landscaped grove, this reference describes a specific event in the 2026 festival programme. If a festival is a deciding factor for your travel dates, check the dates of the relevant programme.
