An Orthodox church on a hill, an archaeological monument near Jānēni and a nature reserve in the surrounding area give Mārciena several clearly distinct things to explore. Mārcienas muiža adds a restaurant and spa complex to the mix. This lets you focus your stay on architecture and history, the landscape or the manor’s facilities.
Church and archaeological heritage
The Orthodox church in Mārciena, dedicated to Saint Alexei, is built of stone. It stands on a hill overlooking Mārcienas muiža. In 1872, it was designed by Latvian architect Jānis Frīdrihs Baumanis (1834–1891), the first academically trained architect of Latvian origin. The design date and Baumanis’ biography give the building a temporal and personal context; its dedication and view of Mārcienas muiža also shape its local significance.
Mārcienas pilskalns offers a different perspective on the past. It is listed as an archaeological monument of state importance and lies near Jānēni. The hill is also considered a possible site of the castle mentioned in 1213 as “castr. Marxne.” The connection to the castle site remains a possible interpretation. The cultural points of interest are therefore clearly distinct: the church foregrounds architecture and dedication, while the hill is associated with archaeological classification and historical interpretation.
The manor, cuisine and spa
The Mārcienas muiža complex comprises six buildings. Its restaurant serves dishes featuring the flavours of the Vidzeme region and uses local produce. Alongside culture and landscape, regional cuisine thus stands out as a distinct factor when choosing where to stay.
The Mārcienas muiža spa complex includes various steam baths, a warm counter-current pool, a cold-water pool and a sauna. Facilities also include a mill-style contrast shower, an Arctic Spa whirlpool on an outdoor terrace, relaxing body treatments, massages and a hydrothermal wrap bath. If you would also like to take a wellness focus into account when choosing a place to stay, these facilities offer a concrete point of reference alongside Mārciena’s cultural and natural attractions.
Landscape in Krustkalnu Nature Reserve
Krustkalnu Nature Reserve lies in the Mārciena area. Its landscape includes diverse forests, meadows on hillsides and calcareous springs that form small wetlands or lakes. The Krākas Springs, with very clean, carbonate-rich water, are located on the shore of Lake Svētes. The wider landscape of forests and hillside meadows and the springs’ specific connection to water thus offer distinct natural features.
The reserve also has a 26-metre-high observation tower beside the Mārciena–Ļaudona road. The springs and the tower offer different highlights: the Krākas Springs are defined by their lakeside setting and water quality, while the tower stands out for its height and roadside location. This clearly distinguishes the waterscape from a single built feature of the reserve.
