Two distinct themes are central to a stay in Launkalne: the history of the former manor and nature, from trails to protected areas.
Manor and Local History
Launkalne’s Tautas nams is housed in the former Launkalne Manor. The settlement developed around the center of the former Launkalna Manor, also known as Launekaln. On the second floor of the Tautas nams is a lounge where small exhibitions and presentations can be held. This connects a specific cultural venue with the settlement’s origins.
Another historical trace leads back to 1584: historical sources first mentioned Launkalne in connection with the Catholic chapel at Kapeņkalns. The Mūra tilts pār Ruņģu strautu is located near the center of Launkalne. Built in 1855, it is a single-span stone masonry bridge over the Ruņģu strauts and was fully restored in 1997. Its construction and restoration dates give this structure a clear historical timeframe. A bridge span is the section between supports; “single-span” indicates how many such sections there are. “Stone masonry” refers to the construction method using stone, describing a feature distinct from the bridge’s structure.
The “Dullais Augustiņš” event has been held every August in Launkalne since 2013; the specific dates may vary. So if you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates in advance. The years have different roles: 1584 marks an early historical mention, 1855 and 1997 mark the bridge’s construction and restoration, and 2013 marks the start of the annual event. This makes it possible to distinguish historical milestones from a recurring reason to visit.
Nature Trail, Circular Routes, and Protected Areas
Launkalne Nature Reserve is a Natura 2000 site in Launkalne parish. In the broader natural surroundings of Launkalne parish, near the village of Silva, lies the Silva Arboretum: a nationally protected natural area covering 15 hectares. Nature here therefore extends beyond individual trails to include protected areas as well.
The Launkalne Nature Trail starts in Launkalne and runs through forests and natural meadows. At a bend in the Rauza, the trail passes a scenic picnic spot with a table, benches, a fire pit, and a woodshed. This rest area is a specific landmark in the description of the nature trail.
The two circular routes also have different focuses. The large circular route from Launkalne passes through hilly terrain, where dense forests alternate with rural landscapes. An interactive version of the small circular route is available in the Actionbound app, combining the walk with an educational game. When choosing between the two, you can base your decision on the large route’s scenery or the small route’s playful learning experience.
