Ozoli can be explored through two distinct local themes: outdoor activity and remembrance of its school history. An activity field opened by the municipality adds a sporting dimension; Jāņa dārzs and a memorial room point to people and the history of Liezēres pagasts. There are also Līgo examples that connect sport and culture in different ways.
Activity Field for Exercise
In 2017, the municipality opened an activity field in Ozoli for active recreation; it was still listed in a municipal investment overview from 2021. The field, opened in 2017, included a 250 m² shock-absorbing rubber surface. It adds a sporting focus to the local landscape and complements the historical and cultural themes with a connection to physical activity.
Jāņa dārzs and School History
Since 1 September 1996, the 2.9-hectare grounds surrounding Liezēres pamatskola have been called Jāņa dārzs. They commemorate former school principal Jānis Ozoliņš. The grounds, name and dedication are connected: a specific area is named after a particular person, and the commemoration has a fixed date. This gives local history a different emphasis from a single event date.
Liezēres pamatskola also has a local history museum room, or memorial room, with extensive material about the school and Liezēres pagasts. The thematic perspective thus extends from remembering an individual to the history of a school and the pagasts. Together, Jāņa dārzs and the memorial room offer two distinct cultural points of reference: a commemoration dedicated to an individual and a broader history of the school and locality.
Līgo: Run and Cultural Programme
The traditional Līgo skrējiens was held for the eleventh time in 2025. It included running routes for children and adults, as well as a 6 km Nordic walking route. Running and Nordic walking are the event’s distinct sporting components. The activity field is for active recreation, whereas the Līgo skrējiens is a sporting event held on a specific date.
A Līgo programme was announced in Ozoli for 23 June 2026 at 19:00. It included the premiere by the Liezēre amateur theatre of R. Blaumanis’ “No saldenās pudeles” and a Līgo Green Ball event at the Ozolu estrāde. Alongside the sporting Līgo run, theatre and a ball event are therefore also part of the cultural programme. If you would like to include Līgo in your travel plans, check the dates for the year you intend to visit.
Highlights for Your Stay
When planning, it is especially useful to distinguish between place-based themes and events scheduled for specific dates. The activity field, Jāņa dārzs and the school’s history offer different ways to engage with exercise and culture; a specific Līgo programme, by contrast, is tied to its date. Consider whether you would rather plan your stay around local history and activity or around a festival programme. This will help you assess Ozoli in terms of the themes that matter for your travel decision.
