Teiči Bog is one of the largest undisturbed raised bogs in the Baltics. Teiči Nature Reserve is Latvia’s largest nature reserve. It is important for the conservation of rare bird species typical of bogs and serves as a feeding and resting place for migratory waterbirds. The area thus brings together the protection of distinctive bog habitats and the region’s importance for bird migration.
Lakes, Wetlands and Plant Life
Lake Lubāns is Latvia’s largest lake, and the Lubāns Wetland Complex is Latvia’s largest inland wetland complex. You can go birdwatching in the area around the lake. About 250 bird species have been observed there. Boat trips are available on the lake, including at sunset. Boat tours on the River Ogre are available at the Brāži Cascades, along with boats and routes. Another way to get to know the area around Lubāns is a 90-minute guided tour featuring local stories.
Birdwatching and boat trips offer different experiences: birds can be observed around Lake Lubāns, while boat trips take place on the lake. If you are interested in local history, the Lubāns Wetland Information Centre has information about the Stone Age in the area around the lake. Regional cuisine is another discovery: you can enjoy freshly smoked fish in the area. You can also pre-order a fish soup inspired by Latgale’s culinary heritage at the “Zvejnieki” fishermen’s farm.
The Kalsnava Arboretum offers a different perspective on plant life. It has the largest collection of woody plants in eastern Latvia. From early spring to late autumn, you can see 2,500 different tree varieties and 45,000 plant species there. A rhododendron trail and a pond add to the walk; you can cross the pond via a bridge with views of water lilies.
The landscape of Krustkalni Nature Reserve is distinctive in its own right: it is in Madona Municipality, covers 2,978 hectares, is hilly and has 13 lakes. Visits are possible only when accompanied by a member of the reserve staff. Check this access requirement before your trip.
Discover History and Culture
Varakļāni Local History Museum is housed in Varakļāni Manor; its offerings include exhibitions, guided tours and a park. The Madona Local History and Art Museum collects, preserves and displays materials relating to the history, culture and art of the town of Madona. It also has a permanent exhibition on the archaeology of the municipality. The two museums thus focus on different subjects: one on the history and culture of the town, the other on the archaeology of the municipality.
Cesvaine Palace combines history with striking architecture: the hunting lodge is designed in an eclectic style, bringing together Gothic, Romanesque and Art Nouveau elements. Much of the palace is open to visitors, and its authentic interiors have been preserved. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement. Another cultural discovery is the puppet exhibition about animated films by A. Burova, which offers themed guided tours and hands-on activities.
The Aiviekstes Ozoli Trail features traces of the Stone Age: a settlement with clay vessels and tools and weapons made of bone, stone, wood and flint. Visitors can also try making fire with wood and flint. Events for active recreation, including medieval competitions, take place on the trail throughout the year. In winter, it becomes a cross-country ski trail.
Activities by Season and Interest
The summit of Gaiziņkalns is 312 metres above sea level and is Latvia’s highest point. A trail over the summit is about one kilometre long and offers panoramic views across the four slopes. During the winter season, you can ski, snowboard and go sledding there, and rent equipment. Activities are seasonal; check their availability before your trip. Smeceres Sils also offers seasonal winter activities: roller skiing, cross-country skiing and ski rental.
If you are interested in regional produce, two farms offer different specialities: Henome grows quinces and offers tours and tastings. Lancori grows garlic, makes seasonings, and also offers tours and tastings. Depending on your interests, you can focus on quince cultivation or on garlic and seasonings.
