Zaļenieki offers several distinct ways to plan a stay: marked walking trails, manor history, church architecture and history, and activities related to cultural heritage and trees. When choosing what to do, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between time outdoors, historical exploration and themed visits. The options are not all organized in the same way: for several guided tours and a visit to the tree nursery, booking in advance is part of the planning.
Walking Trails and Manor History
Zaļenieki Manor Park has several marked walking trails through scenic landscapes, including short obstacle courses. If you prefer to spend some of your time being active outdoors, the landscape and route shape this part of your visit. Take the obstacle sections into account when choosing a walk, as you consider which activities suit your stay.
Zaļenieki Manor offers guided tours by prior arrangement. If you plan to make a tour a fixed part of your stay, book in advance and arrange your visit in good time. Built in the Baroque style, Zaļenieki Bīroni Hunting Manor has been a centre of local cultural and social life since its construction. Its history links the architecture with the hunting manor’s role in local life, giving manor culture both a historical and social dimension.
Church and Cultural Heritage
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Zaļā (Zaļenieki) parish was built around 1571, on the orders of Duke Gotthard Kettler, on the site of a Catholic chapel. Both the approximate date of construction and the earlier religious site are part of its history. If you are interested in religious architecture, this story adds another perspective on the area’s past to its manor culture.
The Restauratoru House offers lifelong learning activities for adults. These help preserve knowledge of cultural heritage and crafts for future generations. School groups can visit the Restauratoru House for guided tours from Monday to Wednesday by individual prior arrangement. If you are planning such a tour, arrange your visit individually in advance; the days of the week do not replace this arrangement. The activities offer different ways to engage with cultural heritage: educational activities for adults and arranged tours for school groups.
Recreation and Trees
Zaļenieki Swing Park near Zaļā Manor is a family-friendly place for active recreation in scenic surroundings. The park was established in autumn 2024. Its focus offers a different emphasis from the historical themes: active recreation and an explicitly family-friendly setting. If you would also like to consider this recreational focus when choosing your destination, the park offers a specific option.
Zaļenieku kokaudzētava tree nursery offers guided tours of the arboretum, as well as visits to its tree collection and the nursery itself. There are several options for exploring trees: a guided walk through the arboretum, the collection or the nursery. Advance booking is required for a visit. Take this requirement into account when planning if you would like to learn more about trees and their collection in Zaļenieki.
