The hiking trails in Korneti vary in length and theme: one route follows the shores of several lakes, another can be combined with seasonal swimming; other trails focus on culture or exercise. The area also offers a lake landscape, historic sites and nature trails. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether you mainly want to explore the water’s edge, choose a particular route or include cultural sites.
Lake Landscape and Protected Areas
The Korneti–Peļļi Gorge is best experienced in the immediate surroundings of Korneti. Its 26-kilometre-long main depression contains a chain of 16 lakes in its deepest hollows. The Korneti–Peļļi Nature Reserve, in turn, encompasses a chain of 11 lakes in subglacial depressions, oriented from east to west. At the gorge, the focus is on the length of the main depression and the number of lakes; at the nature reserve, it is on the orientation of its lake chain and how it formed in the depressions.
The nature reserve also protects slope forests, boreal forests and Littorella uniflorae vegetation. It has Natura 2000 status and is part of the Veclaicene Protected Landscape Area. In addition to its lakes, these protected areas give the landscape a distinctive natural character.
Hiking Trails by Length and Theme
The Drusku Castle Mound Trail is 3.5 kilometres long, marked in orange and starts at the Veclaicene administrative building in Korneti. The Health Trail is listed as shorter, at 2.5 kilometres, and includes ten exercises. The two trails therefore offer different focuses: the first is defined by its length and marking colour, while exercises are an explicit part of the second.
The Raipala Lake Trail follows the shores of Lake Ievas, Lake Raipala and Lake Trumulītis. Along the way, you can take a detour to the Mišu Medus muzejs. The Ilgāja–Naudas-akmens Trail is 4.5 kilometres long and passes the only island in Lake Ilgāja in Veclaicene, as well as the historic Naudas akmens. Those comparing trails by length will find different distances here; those looking for a particular theme can choose based on the lakeshores, the island or the historic stone.
The Peļļi Trail can be combined with swimming in Lakes Ilgāja and Smilšāja. Swimming suitability depends on seasonal conditions. This makes it different from trails centred on lakeshores or individual cultural sites: here, a possible swimming stop is part of the plan, but it remains subject to the conditions of the season.
High Points, Views and Historic Traces
The Korneti Sightseeing Tower is 27 metres high, and its scenic surroundings have four nature trails. This is distinct from the Drusku Castle Mound Nature Trail: from there, visitors can see the Alūksne and Haanja Highlands in Estonia, and even Munamägi. Drusku Castle Mound itself is a national archaeological monument on the northern shore of Lake Pilskalna. It rises about 90 metres above the lake’s water level.
Other notable places have different points of interest. Dieva kalns rises about 60 metres opposite Lake Klotiņa. At the Māras pēdas akmens stone, two of several depressions resemble footprints. Five decorative corner pillars remain from the old Korneti manor complex. Together, these sites span high points in the landscape, a distinctive stone formation and surviving architectural traces.
Beekeeping History at the Mišu Medus muzejs
The Mišu Medus muzejs collects and restores historic beekeeping equipment and photographs. Visitors can learn about bees up close in the educational apiary; visits must be arranged in advance. Combined with the possible detour from the Raipala Lake Trail, this creates a concrete link between a hike along three lakeshores and a visit focused on beekeeping. Be sure to make the required arrangements when planning your visit.
