The Pededze is at the heart of Jaunanna’s nature theme. Jaunanna Nature Reserve protects the river and the surrounding forests and meadows. Within the reserve, the Pededze is also an important feeding area for several rare bat species. Landscape conservation and biodiversity are closely connected here.

Nature Trail and Protected Area

The “Bebru valstība” nature trail is 1 km long and passes through part of Jaunanna Nature Reserve. The short route therefore offers a direct connection to the protected landscape without representing the entire nature reserve. The boundaries of the nature reserve are marked on the ground with special information signs. These markers make the protected area visible on site and provide a clear point of reference for finding your way.

By Bike or on the Water

Cycling Route No. 168, “Three Annas and Ērmanis,” passes through Jaunanna. You can start or finish it at Umernieki railway station, coordinating your trip with the Gulbene–Alūksne railway timetable. If you plan to use this rail connection at the start or end of your trip, take the timetable into account when planning and check the times for your travel day.

Canoeing on the Pededze River is suitable for both beginners and experienced adventure tourists. At the weir in Jaunanna, boats must be carried to Zaķu Island before being put back in the river. If you are planning a canoe trip, include this portage as a fixed part of your itinerary. The two activities involve different planning considerations: for the cycling route, coordination with the timetable matters; for the boat trip, it is carrying the boat around the weir.

Hunting Lodge and Manor History

The “Jaunanna Hunting Palace” hunting lodge was built after 1904 from roughly hewn fieldstones. It can be viewed from the outside. For those interested in architectural history, its date and building material offer concrete clues for understanding the structure.

Another perspective on the history of Jaunanna Manor comes from its watermills. They were also used to process wool and wood. This use reveals a functional side of the manor’s history: the mills were not merely buildings but were used to process different materials. A community festival in Jaunanna in 2024 also offered a look at products from a range of local sectors: entrepreneurs, craftspeople, farmers, textile handworkers and cake bakers presented their products, which were available to taste and buy on site. The event thus brought together food and handcrafted goods—a different way to explore the area than the nature trail and manor history. As this information concerns the 2024 programme, please check the current Jaunanna event dates before your trip.
