The Baloži narrow-gauge peat railway, Stalin-era buildings and several outdoor destinations give the town a range of attractions for visitors. When planning a stay, you can decide whether to focus more on architecture and memorial sites, the moor and industry, or outdoor activities.

Architecture and remembrance

Yellow houses with white columns stand on Riga Street. They are part of a development built in the late 1950s during the Stalin era. This Stalin-era development is one of the most unique complexes of its kind in Latvia. For architecture enthusiasts, both the visible features of the houses and their place within the complex are of interest: this makes it possible to connect individual details with the development as a whole.

The memorial stone to Robert Mūrnieks stands at his former home in Baloži. It commemorates his murder by OMON fighters on January 16, 1991, during the barricades period. In 2009, the “Baložu Varde” fountain was unveiled beside the cultural centre—a monument shaped like the frog on the town’s coat of arms. The two sites offer different points of focus: the memorial stone recalls a person and a specific date, while the fountain draws on the town’s symbol.

Moorland and peat railway

Baloži lies on a sandy peninsula that was once surrounded on all sides by Medema Moor. On trips aboard the Baloži narrow-gauge peat railway, you can see the peat bog and the industrial surroundings of the peat factory. This excursion brings landscape and industry together: the focus is not only on the moor, but also on the area around the peat factory.

The public visitor route through Baloži is about 7 km long. The return journey to Riga is possible from the “Meža iela” or “Sūkņu stacija” stops.

Outdoor activities

The PROPARK disc golf course is suitable for both beginners and professionals. Its unusual terrain resembles a dune zone, and there is also a pine forest. Alongside its suitability for different experience levels, the course’s distinctive terrain features are a highlight. Those planning to include disc golf in their trip will find a different focus here from architecture, memorial sites or the peat railway.

A bunker in Baloži can be visited as a tourist attraction. The swimming area on Lake Titurgas, on Ezera iela in Baloži, has a sandy beach. Mūku kalns offers a good view of Riga. These destinations offer different reasons to visit: sightseeing, time by the water and scenic views add further ways to spend your stay alongside the cultural and landscape attractions.

If you are considering Baloži as a place to stay, you can use these different attractions to help plan your visit. The architecture and memorial sites offer cultural history, the peat railway links the moor with its industrial surroundings, while PROPARK provides a disc golf option for beginners and professionals. This makes it easier to match the town to the interests you want your stay to reflect.
