The Xe-Bang-Fai River has carved the Xe Bang Fai Cave through limestone mountains over millions of years. The large river cave lies in the lush protected area and limestone karst region of Boualapha District in Khammouane Province. It vividly illustrates the geological character of Khammuan: here, the cave itself is the result of a long interplay between river and limestone.

Discover karst landscapes and caves

Hin Nam No National Park also brings together several types of landscape: it encompasses primary rainforests, waterfalls and complex cave systems. In 2025, the park was inscribed together with Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park as a transboundary natural heritage World Heritage Site. Nature enthusiasts will find not only caves here, but also forest and water landscapes within a protected area.

Kong Lor Cave lies in Phu Hin Bun National Park, in Khoun Kham District, Khammouane Province. Boat services and local guide services at the cave provide direct income for the local community. So, alongside nature, the story of a visit to this destination also includes the tangible contribution of local services.

Xiang Liap Cave stands out for the height of its entrance, which measures 30 metres. The cave is about 14 kilometres northeast of Thakhek District on Route 12, near Xiang Liap village. At Nang Aen Cave, visitors can climb up and down stairs to view natural rock formations. It is 18 kilometres northeast of Thakhek city on National Highway 12.

When planning your route, note the different reference points: the distance given for Nang Aen is measured from Thakhek city, while the distance for Xiang Liap is measured from Thakhek District. The distances are therefore not directly comparable. Road conditions can change, so check them before setting out.

Cultural sites and regional history

Tham Pa Fa Cave, also known as Buddha Cave, is an important cultural and religious landmark in Khammouane Province. Here, the religious significance of the site is as much a focus as the cave landscape. That Sikhottabong offers a different cultural highlight: the That Sikhottabong Festival is held there every year in the third lunar month. Dates vary according to the lunar year; if you plan your trip around the festival, check the date for the year in question.

Traditional crafts are also part of the province’s cultural identity: the Phou Tai people in Khammouane are associated with traditional crafts and are known for their careful weaving. This offers another perspective on Khammuan, alongside its caves and protected areas.

In local areas of Boualapha District, the Ho Chi Minh Trail includes historical remains such as bomb craters, remnants of weapons and old marching routes. Access restrictions may apply in some areas. These local restrictions are important to bear in mind when exploring these historical traces.

More natural attractions and varied highlights

Phou Pha Marn is considered the highest point and an access point to Phou Hin Boun National Protected Area. It is also an important stop along the Thakhek Loop route. Tad Sieng Leu lies within the national protected area in Khammouane Province and is a particularly important destination for people who enjoy hiking. Khammuan brings together a range of interests: caves and karst, cultural sites, protected areas and hiking destinations.
