Laos offers a wide range of discoveries: the Plain of Jars draws attention to Iron Age burial practices, Luang Prabang combines traditional Lao architecture with buildings erected by European colonial authorities, and Nam Ha National Protected Area brings together jungle trekking, kayaking and rafting. Markets, landscapes and the boat journey to Tad Sae Waterfall round out the picture. When planning your trip around your interests, culture, nature, local food or outdoor activities can be a starting point.

Archaeological traces and historic architecture

The Plain of Jars in central Laos comprises more than 2,100 tubular megalithic stone jars that were used for Iron Age burial practices. The serial site, made up of 15 components, includes large carved stone jars as well as stone discs, secondary burials, gravestones, quarries and grave goods. These components date from 500 BCE to 500 CE. Interest therefore lies not only in the jars’ unusual shape, but also in the different elements of the burial landscape.

The townscape of Luang Prabang combines traditional Lao architecture with buildings erected by European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Wat Xieng Thong is an example of traditional Lao art and Buddhist architecture: King Saya Setthathirath commissioned the temple in the 16th century, and it was completed in 1560. The Royal Palace Museum in Luang Prabang was built in 1904 during the French colonial era and displays the Prabang Buddha image. From temple construction to museum architecture, a span of time links different architectural and historical periods.

Vat Phou: a cultural landscape on a larger scale

Vat Phou shifts the focus from individual buildings to a cultural landscape: more than 1,000 years old, it was planned and extends for about 10 km from the mountain summit to the riverbank. It includes temples, shrines and waterworks. The temple complex is an exceptional testament to Southeast Asian cultures, especially the Khmer Empire, which dominated the region from the 10th to the 14th century. Its geographical extent and cultural-historical context offer two distinct perspectives on the site.

Trekking, water sports and a riverside village

Nam Ha National Protected Area lies partly in Laos’s Luang Namtha Province. Jungle trekking, kayaking and rafting are offered there. Activities range from exploring on foot to experiences on the water.

The Nalan Trail leads to a remote Khmu village on the banks of the Nam Ha River, where an overnight stay is possible. When planning, the destination and the possibility of staying overnight there are therefore relevant alongside the trail itself. The nature experiences described differ not only in activity, but also in their stated destination.

Markets with different specialties

The markets have different highlights: the Luang Namtha Night Market offers local food and drinks, including freshly prepared broths, noodles and grilled chicken skewers. The Muang Sing Market offers fresh produce and Tai Lue noodles, and is also a place to find local handicrafts. Prepared food and drinks are the focus of the first market, while the second also offers fresh goods and handicrafts. Specific offerings may change.

Landscapes and water

The landscape of Vientiane Province in central Laos ranges from the flat, fertile alluvial plains of the Mekong Valley to rugged limestone mountains in the north and west of the province. This shift between valley plain and mountainous terrain creates a striking contrast within the province.

Ang Nam Ngum

Ang Nam Ngum, also called the Ngum Reservoir, is a scenic inland lake formed by the Nam Ngum Dam. The lake thus brings together a landscape feature and a specific infrastructure origin.

Tad Sae Waterfall

Tad Sae Waterfall lies outside the main town of Luang Prabang and is accessible by boat. The journey involves traveling from the city and then taking a traditional longboat on the Nam Khan. Small cascades and walkways over the water are among the waterfall’s features. Check the current arrangements for the boat journey before visiting.
