In Kanuma City, Machi no Eki Shin-Kanuma Juku is a central hub for tourism and local exchange. The main building offers information about Kanuma Soba, Kanuma Konnyaku and seasonal tourist attractions. This brings together local specialties and seasonal themes as two distinct points of interest. As you plan, you can consider whether food culture and seasonal information will be the deciding factors, or whether you would rather connect your trip with festivals, park scenery, art and shrine culture. These different themes offer distinct reasons to visit and provide a starting point for choosing the right time to travel.

Spring and Early Summer at Senjuyama Park

The scenery at Senjuyama Park changes throughout the year: cherry trees and azaleas bloom in spring, while fresh greenery appears in early summer. Choosing between these periods therefore means deciding not only when to visit, but also which aspect of the park to focus on: blossoms or young greenery. The Cherry Blossom Festival and Azalea Festival are held in the park every year; their dates vary from year to year. If you want to travel for one of these festivals, check the specific dates for your travel year. Set your travel dates based on the event schedule for the relevant year.

Festivals and Rides

The Kanuma Autumn Festival is a nationally designated cultural property and is registered as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO, together with 32 other festivals. If you are looking for a cultural festival, you can consider this status alongside the seasonal events at Senjuyama Park. This gives you a choice of different festival themes: a festival with designated cultural heritage status, or the annual Cherry Blossom and Azalea festivals, whose dates vary from year to year.

Senjuyama Park also has a Ferris wheel, a fairy-tale train and the Jet Star ride. These rides are popular with young children. They offer another kind of reason to visit, alongside the seasonal scenery and festivals. As the rides may change, check which ones are currently operating before your visit.

Shrine Culture and Art

Imamiya Shrine is located in the center of Kanuma City. The Sumio Kawakami Museum offers a different cultural focus, with a collection of around 2,000 works. Most of the collection was donated by Katsusaburo Hasegawa, a former student of Sumio Kawakami from Kanuma City.

Kawakami’s works are distinguished by a delicate, humorous and distinctive style. Motifs from Nanban culture and the Meiji period add specific thematic points of reference to this style. Those interested in the art can therefore pay attention both to the way the works are presented and to their motifs: one perspective focuses on Kawakami’s approach, while the other looks at the cultural themes in his works. Together with Imamiya Shrine, this creates a cultural focus distinct from park blossoms, rides and festivals.
