Several sculptures, seasonal flowers and a lawn define Kawaguchi West Park (Lilia Park). Here, art and greenery sit side by side, while the floral display changes with the seasons. If the blossoms are a deciding factor in your plans, time your visit to coincide with the relevant season.
Art and greenery at Kawaguchi West Park
The sculptures give the park a cultural touch; the flowers add a seasonal element. The lawn complements these features with open green space. This makes the park a destination in its own right during a stay in Kawaguchi, without suggesting that its different features offer the same experience. When deciding whether to visit, consider whether you are especially interested in public art, seasonal plants or a green setting.
The seasonal blooms are an important difference from attractions that remain the same throughout the year: the timing affects the role the flowers play in a visit. If you want to plan specifically around them, choose your travel dates accordingly. The sculptures and lawn provide other features of the park regardless of the season.
Nature and attractions in the municipality of Kawaguchi-shi
Different nature-related attractions offer distinct experiences in the municipality of Kawaguchi-shi. The collection at Green Center includes around 1,300 orchid varieties in approximately 4,000 pots. Selected plants are displayed year-round; the specimens on display may vary. The tropical greenhouse offers another botanical experience: it features around 200 plant varieties, with flowers and fruit to see throughout the year. The plants on display may also change.
The outdoor areas focus on observing nature. In the Insect Forest, you can watch butterflies, dragonflies and rhinoceros beetles near the water and from the forest deck. Many waterbirds visit Swan Pond throughout the year, though their presence varies by season. The options range from plant collections and a greenhouse to wildlife observation outdoors.
Other attractions in the municipality include a fee-based miniature railway. Its 600-meter route passes a railway crossing, a railway bridge and a tunnel. Service may vary depending on the weather and maintenance. The Adventure Forest, meanwhile, has 22 different field-course play structures; the facility’s current operating rules apply.
Science and culture
Kawaguchi City Science Museum is located within SKIP City and opened in 2003. Before you travel, check the latest location and visitor information, as facility details may change. The planetarium, with its 20-meter-diameter dome, presents a starry sky in which the Milky Way is depicted using individual stars. It also features views of the universe presented using current data.
The observatory offers several ways to observe the sky: the main observatory has a 65-centimeter reflecting telescope, while the secondary observatory has a 20-centimeter refractor suited to observing the Moon and planets. There is also a solar observatory. Check the latest information about facilities and programs before your visit. The museum regularly holds science shows as well as “Doki Doki Science,” which offers themed activities involving crafts, observation and experiments. “Waku Waku Work” focuses on scientific design and creation. Formats and dates may change, so check the current program.
The science exhibition room has around 40 interactive science exhibits without explanatory labels. This area differs from the planetarium and observation facilities: it focuses on interactive exhibits, while those areas feature celestial displays and telescopes.
IINA Park Kawaguchi, also known as Akayama History Nature Park, is also located in the municipality of Kawaguchi-shi, at Akayama 501-1. It is home to ASOBooN, an indoor and outdoor play area designed by BørneLund, with seven differently themed zones. The park also has a free play area with separate sections for toddlers aged 1 to 3 and children aged 3 to 6. As details and access may change, check the latest information before visiting.
Another cultural attraction is the former Tanaka House: this three-story wooden and brick residence was completed in 1923 and features Western-style architecture. It offers an architectural point of interest alongside the nature and science attractions.
