Yoshimi offers a range of local attractions for visitors, including designated cultural sites, archaeological finds, and a seasonal strawberry-picking activity. In Ōgushi, the Hōkyōintō pagodas at Kinzoin and the history of Ōgushi Hikawa Shrine appeal to those interested in cultural history, while Ōgushi Strawberry Farm adds a chance to go strawberry picking. Its seasonal nature makes a practical difference when planning your trip.

Pagodas and Archaeological Traces

The Hōkyōintō pagodas at Kinzoin in Ōgushi are designated as a prefectural cultural property. The pagodas’ history is made particularly tangible by a find uncovered during restoration work: beneath them were human remains in a white Chinese four-handled vessel from the early 13th century, as well as in a large Atsumi ceramic vessel from the second half of the 12th century. These dates refer to the vessels. The designation thus sits alongside an archaeological context involving two vessels from different periods.

The group of stone Buddhas at Kannonji, at the address Ōgushi 1282, is also designated as an archaeological cultural property of Yoshimi Town. The two classifications are easy to distinguish: at Kinzoin, the Hōkyōintō pagodas are a prefectural cultural property; at Kannonji, a group of stone Buddhas is an archaeological cultural property of the town. Those interested in the area’s history will find another designated cultural site in Ōgushi, in addition to the find at the pagodas.

Traditions at Hikawa Shrine

Ōgushi Hikawa Shrine was traditionally revered as the tutelary shrine of Ōgushi village. According to one tradition, the warrior Ōgushi Jirō Shigechika had Hikawa Shrine transferred here from Musashi at the time—the present-day Ōmiya Hikawa Shrine. Susanoo-no-Mikoto is worshipped as the principal deity of Ōgushi Hikawa Shrine. The site is therefore notable for both its traditional role as a tutelary shrine and the story of its origins.

The name Ōgushi Jirō Shigechika also appears in the tradition surrounding the Hōkyōintō pagoda at Kinzoin. The pagoda bears an inscription dated 1376 and is traditionally described as the warrior’s tomb. There is a chronological gap between the warrior’s time and the pagoda. The inscription and the interpretation of the pagoda as a tomb should therefore be distinguished: the inscription dates the structure, while its attribution to Shigechika remains a tradition.

Seasonal Strawberry Picking

Ōgushi Strawberry Farm offers a 45-minute strawberry-picking experience with unlimited consumption. The farm’s strawberry operations, dates, and conditions vary by season. If you would like to include picking in your travel plans, check these details in advance. This lets you plan the activity as a seasonal highlight, rather than treating it like the cultural sites that are designated year-round.

The varieties associated with Ōgushi Strawberry Farm are Benitama, Beni Hoppe, and Berry Pop Suzu. Which varieties are available may change with the season. Their names add a culinary dimension to strawberry picking, but you should not count on any particular variety being available during your visit.

Choose a Focus for Your Trip

When planning, the main difference between the strawberry-picking activity and the cultural-history attractions is its seasonal nature. If picking is the deciding factor, check the dates and conditions first. Those more interested in archaeology can consider the history of the finds at Kinzoin and the separate designation of the group of stone Buddhas at Kannonji; the history of Hikawa Shrine offers a religious and historical perspective on the area. This way, you can choose Yoshimi based on the theme you want to shape your trip around.
