Different travel interests come together in Sennan: coastal scenery and seasonal blossoms sit alongside historic sites and collections. For planning, it’s worth choosing your main focus first—for example, a visit during blossom season or time for architectural and regional history.

The Coast and Attractions at Marble Beach

Sennan Marble Beach stands out for its surface of white marble stones. In 2006, it became the first place in Osaka Prefecture to be designated a “Lover’s Sanctuary.” SENNAN LONG PARK, which opened on July 3, 2020, is located right by the beach. Its approximately two-kilometer-long area is divided into activity, community, market and glamping zones; this layout may change. Tarui Southern Beach is also located beside Marble Beach.

A Sazan Pia shop is next to Marble Beach. The city’s visitor center introduces and sells regional products; the shop offers fresh locally grown vegetables and fruit, as well as regional specialties. The selection may vary. At SENNAN LONG PARK, Umi no Marche is a weekend market featuring local food. If you plan to visit, check its current operating schedule in advance.

At Marble Beach, visitors can also take part in a traditional net-fishing experience, followed by a barbecue featuring fresh seafood. As booking requirements and dates may change, check them in advance. This makes it easier to plan this activity specifically, rather than assume it is a beach activity available at any time.

Blossom Seasons and Walks

At Hanasaki Farm’s English Rose Garden, the former flower area of the agricultural park has been redesigned. Roses usually bloom from mid-May to early June and around October; exact timing depends on the weather. Another seasonal opportunity is the Kumano Kaido Shindachi-juku Wisteria Festival: it lasts about a week during the wisteria bloom from mid to late April. During this time, the wisteria trellis and an adjacent viewing platform are open to the public. Check the festival dates for your travel year. The periods mentioned differ considerably: roses usually bloom in late spring or fall, while the wisteria festival takes place in April.

For a walk that includes a climb, Kin’yūji Plum Grove has a path leading up the hill. The grove extends along the southern side of the path, from the upper part of the hill to near its foot. Seasonal conditions may affect the experience.

Historic Estate, Temple Ruins and Sites

Yamadake House in Shinge Nakamura preserves the atmosphere of a large estate belonging to a village headman during the Edo period. Eight buildings from the mid-to-late Edo period stand on a plot of about 840 tsubo: the main house, an entrance house, a kitchen building, a rice storehouse, a warehouse, a main gate, a Nagayamon gate and an earthen wall. All eight are registered tangible cultural properties of Japan. In 2002, the house became the first registered tangible cultural property in Sennan City. It offers a concrete insight into the size and architectural layout of a village headman’s estate of the time.

The Kaieji Temple Ruins have been laid out as a park. Parts of the base of the five-story pagoda and remnants of the cloister have been partially reconstructed. In the adjoining Sennan City Archaeological Cultural Property Center, a permanent exhibition on the second floor focuses mainly on finds from the temple grounds. A total of 302 excavated objects are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan and are on permanent display there.

Umayado-oji is also designated a historic site by Osaka Prefecture. Since the Umayado-oji Shrine was incorporated into Ichioka Shrine in 1907, only a stone monument has remained at the site. Shindachi is also of interest for the area’s historical context: in the medieval period, it developed as an inn station on the Kumano Kaido, and during the Edo period as the post station of Shindachi-juku on the Sankin-kotai route.

Practical Planning for a Visit

At Okadaura Fishing Port, the auction starts at 2:20 p.m. every day except Wednesdays and Sundays, announced by a siren. It can be observed from outside the market building. If fishing is canceled due to the weather, the market may remain closed, so check conditions in advance. “Sennan anago” is the local product name for farmed sea eel. The Okadaura Fisheries Cooperative works with businesses, government agencies and academia to conserve and restore stocks in Osaka Bay, which have declined sharply.

There are several reasons to stay in Sennan: seasonal blossoms, coastal experiences, or historic collections and architecture. Choose your travel dates according to your main interest, and check the conditions for time-specific activities such as the wisteria festival or the auction in advance.
