Several distinct themes come together in Daito: Nozaki Kannon at the foot of Mount Iimori, a hiking trail with a marked section, historic cultural heritage sites, and the waterways of the Goryo district. If you are looking for a hotel in Daito, start by asking which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay; the differences below can help you choose a focus.
Nozaki Kannon and Mount Iimori
From JR Nozaki Station, Nozaki Approach Shopping Street leads about a ten-minute walk east to Nozaki Kannon at the foot of Mount Iimori. The walking time is approximate; check the route locally, as routes may change.
The Mount Iimori hiking trail connects Nozaki Kannon with Shijonawate Shrine. The section from Nozaki Kannon to the Outdoor Activity Center is developed as “Daito no Mori” and has signs at several points. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
Nozaki Mairi Park is directly next to Nozaki Kannon and is designed in the Japanese style. As a tourism information center for Daito, it has brochures about the Iimori Castle ruins, Miyoshi Nagayoshi, the Mount Iimori hiking trail, and the stone walls.
Nozaki Mairi offers a special way to visit: during the festival period, the curtain in the main hall is opened, allowing you to directly pay your respects to the statue of the Eleven-Headed Kannon, which is normally kept there. At Ryuganji, figures from Japanese folk tales greet visitors on the temple’s unusual grounds. There is also a large Buddha statue there, which may be of particular interest to children.
Cultural Heritage and Iimori Castle
The Daito Historical Folk Museum combines viewing and hands-on activities: you can try on a replica of the armor excavated from Doyama Kofun and work patterns into clay vessels. You can also view exhibits, look up cultural properties and historic walking routes, and explore them by video.
The app “Reviving Iimori Castle — the Last Seat of the ‘Tenka-jin’ Miyoshi Nagayoshi” offers another perspective on the Iimori Castle ruins. It lets you compare the present-day and historical landscape and discover the site while walking. Check whether the app is available before your visit.
Waterways and Landscape in Goryo
Parts of the former settlement landscape, crisscrossed by waterways, have been preserved in the Goryo district. Together with old buildings, they offer a water-shaped landscape, with cherry blossoms in spring. The Goryo Seseragi Waterway is located in this district and preserves the history of agricultural transport and travel from before the age of the automobile.
Rides on a traditional rice boat are offered on the Goryo Seseragi Waterway every year from April to September, on the first and third Sundays of each month. Rides take place between 10 a.m. and noon and cost 100 yen. Check the current schedule before your trip.
These experiences have different time windows: boat rides are limited to specific Sundays during the season, while direct worship of the Eleven-Headed Kannon is available during the festival period. If either experience is a deciding factor for your trip, check the relevant dates before making plans.
