Machinmon and Itoman Hare offer two distinct ways to explore the local history and culture of Itoman. The lane can be understood through its place among the Jōguwā and its market history; the boat race combines a date based on the lunar calendar with prayers for a good catch and safe voyages. Together, these topics offer different cultural perspectives on Aza Itoman.

Machinmon and the history of the lanes

Machinmon is the sixth of nine lanes known as Jōguwā, which run from National Route 331 to Itoman Fishing Port in the western area and, in part, the Machihata districts of Aza Itoman. The number six places Machinmon within the sequence of nine; National Route 331 and Itoman Fishing Port mark its endpoints. The name dates back to 1888, when the lane was raised and a new market was established there. In addition to its location, the year and market give the lane a specific historical connection.

Itoman Hare: boat racing and tradition

Itoman Hare takes place on the fourth day of the fifth month according to the lunar calendar, in the central area of Itoman Fishing Port. If the race is important to your travel dates, check the announcement for the relevant year: the municipality publishes separate annual event notices. The race has long been associated with prayers for a good catch and safe voyages. After World War II, it gradually developed into a local event in Aza Itoman. Today, people who do not work in the fishing industry also take part; Hare has grown into a major community event.

The boat races represent the three former settlements of Nishimura, Nakamura, and Miijima. Itoman Hare conveys Okinawa’s traditional folk beliefs and is considered an important, representative example of boat-racing events found in various parts of Okinawa. The three former settlements anchor the race in its local setting, while its place among boat races held across Okinawa situates it within a wider cultural context.

Other perspectives in the municipality

The municipality also includes places with a focus different from the local history of Aza Itoman. Yoza-ga is designed as a park; on weekends, families and other visitors come to play in the water. The ruins of Gushikawa Castle stand on a wave-cut cliff about 17 meters high that projects into the sea. Except for the castle gate, the site is surrounded by cliffs on three sides. Inside the castle, a hole called “Hiifuchimii” leads to the sea. At Yamashiro Uriguchi, visitors can observe living creatures in tidal pools at low tide.

Travel interests and finding a hotel

For travel planning, these topics differ in focus and timing: Machinmon offers lane and market history, Itoman Hare is tied to a date on the lunar calendar, and Yamashiro Uriguchi offers opportunities for observation at low tide. If you’re looking for hotels in Itoman, you could start by considering whether cultural history, a particular event, or nature observation matters most to your stay.
