Discover Urasoe through a variety of themes: the history of Gusuku, lacquer art and the landscape. Those who focus on historic sites will encounter a past dating back to the 13th century. Museums and an expansive park add art, archaeological finds and preserved nature to this picture. This lets you explore Urasoe according to your own interests rather than reducing the city to a single attraction.

Gusuku History and Museums

Urasoe Gusuku was built in the late 13th century. It is considered the seat of power of a ruler who brought central Okinawa under his control. The site’s walls were lost during the Battle of Okinawa and through postwar stone quarrying; restoration work has been carried out. Both the construction of the Gusuku and the changes that followed are therefore part of its history. Urasoe Grand Park has a history-learning area centered on Urasoe Gusuku and Urasoe Yodore.

The Urasoe Gusuku-Yodore Museum displays finds from excavations at Urasoe Gusuku and Urasoe Yodore, as well as prewar panels. The Urasoe Historic Museum focuses on something different: it displays archaeological finds from sites in Urasoe City and traditional everyday items donated by residents. The two collections thus offer different perspectives—from excavation finds and historic panels to objects from daily life.

The Urasoe City Museum of Art also explores a distinctive aspect of local culture. It opened in 1990 as Japan’s first museum specializing in lacquer art and Okinawa Prefecture’s first public museum. Its permanent exhibition displays around 60 works at a time, primarily Ryukyu lacquerware. The exhibition theme changes three times a year. For those interested in this art form, both the museum’s specialization and its changing thematic focus are worth noting.

Parkland and Views Across the City

Urasoe Grand Park preserves one of the city’s largest forest landscapes. The Makiminato River flows down from Nishihara Town and through the park. The ridgelines are at an elevation of 130 meters and offer a viewpoint overlooking the city. Nature, views and the history-learning area come together within the same park. This makes the park a destination in its own right, alongside the museums and historic structures.

Historic Routes, Bridges and Tombs

The historic Nakagami HĹŤseidĹŤ ran through the Urasoe areas of Takushi, KyĹŤzuka, Ahacha, Nakama and Makiminato. A section of the route around Ahacha Bridge has been restored and preserved. Based on archaeologically discovered remains, approximately 187 meters of the route were restored near the bridge and designated a national historic cultural property. Ahacha Bridge consists of a south bridge over the upper reaches of the Kowan River and a north bridge over the Abuchi River. This lets visitors distinguish, in one place, the history of the route, its archaeological basis and its two different river crossings.

Another historic site is the Iso Takauhaka Tomb. It is located above the Urasoe Shell Mound on a rocky slope. The tomb was cut into the slope, enclosed at the front by a stone wall and given an arched entrance. It is a tomb in an ancient architectural style. For those interested in building methods and archaeological traces, it offers another, distinct way to explore Urasoe’s past, alongside Gusuku and the historic routes.

Bingata Craft in Maeda

A tourism listing from 2013 describes the Shiro Bingata dyeing workshop in Maeda, Urasoe City, with a craft gallery on the first floor and a dyeing workshop on the second floor. The gallery offered various Bingata items for sale, and visitors could tour the dyeing workshop. Before visiting, check whether the workshop and tours are currently available. This topic complements lacquer art with another traditional craft and may interest you if you would like to explore textile design as well as museums.
