A harbor, a sculpture made from discarded objects, and ferry connections to three islands give Tamano a clear focus on the waterfront. At Uno Port, Setouchi Triennale art meets connections to Naoshima, Teshima, and Shodoshima. Uno is about a ten-minute walk from Chikko Ginza Station. This gives you a specific question to guide your travel plans: should your stay focus mainly on art at the harbor, or also include a ferry trip?
Art and Island Connections at Uno Port
Uno is one of the venues for the contemporary art project Setouchi Triennale. At the harbor, Chinu is on display: a giant sculpture of a black sea bream made from discarded objects. The materials are part of the work’s impact: everyday objects take on a new form as a depiction of a sea fish. This means you can see the harbor not only as a starting point for a ferry trip, but also as a place for public art.
Ferry services from Uno Port connect to Naoshima, Teshima, and Shodoshima. These destinations can make island-hopping a focus of your trip; specific departure times are not set out here. If you plan to take a ferry on a particular day, check the timetable for that day of your trip. The approximate walking time from Chikko Ginza Station can also help you factor the walk to the harbor into your travel plans.
Priorities for Planning Your Stay
When looking for a hotel in Tamano, it helps to first sort out what interests you during your stay: art and ferry destinations are the main draws at Uno Port, while the park, garden, and shrine show other sides of the municipality. If a ferry trip to an island is the deciding factor, include the timetable in your plans. This lets you search for accommodation based on the destinations you want to shape your stay, rather than choosing solely from a list of attractions.
Park, Play Areas, and Food at Miyama Park
Miyama Park in Tamano offers a range of options for different interests. Wanpaku Hiroba is a playground, and the park also has lawns, areas for free play, and water-play areas. At Mimik-chan Plaza, visitors can enjoy cherry blossoms and picnics in spring. The park thus combines green spaces and play areas with a seasonal reason to visit in spring.
Miyama Park also has food options: vegetables and fresh fish are sold directly, and there are takeout options and restaurants. If you have a particular offering in mind, check what is currently available before your visit; individual operators may change. This lets you combine a visit to the park flexibly with a meal or with buying vegetables and fresh fish, without relying on a particular business.
Garden Design and Shrine Culture
Miyama English Garden is also located in Tamano. The grounds include six themed gardens and were designed by British garden designer Peter Thurman. While Miyama Park is known for its play, water, and food options, the English Garden focuses on different garden themes and design. Depending on whether you are looking for green spaces and play areas or landscaped garden spaces, the two destinations offer a clear contrast.
Another cultural destination in Tamano is Tamahime Shrine. Toyotamahime-no-Mikoto is enshrined there and is regarded as a guardian deity of the sea and a deity associated with safe childbirth. A mountain path from the grounds of Tamahime Shrine leads to the upper sanctuary of Goryu Inari Shrine in about five minutes. According to tradition, a ball of fire that had sprung from Tateishi fell there. From the site, you can see across the townscape of the Tama district in Tamano City. The path thus connects two shrines with a traditional story and a view over the district.
