A school that is the world’s oldest surviving public school and a shrine with rebuilt National Treasures: In Okayama Prefecture, buildings and historic sites tell very different chapters of the past. There are also castle ruins whose surroundings change with the seasons, and island paths that appear only at low tide. The discoveries that appeal to you can help set the focus for your trip.

Castles, Schools and Architecture

Tsuyama Castle has received two special distinctions: it was selected as one of Japan’s 100 famous castles and as one of the country’s 100 most notable cherry blossom spots. About 1,000 cherry trees bloom on the grounds from early to mid-April; the flowering period can shift depending on the weather. Here, castle history meets a distinctly seasonal natural experience.

Shizutani School also brings together educational history and remarkable architecture. It is considered the world’s oldest surviving public school. Its Lecture Hall is designated a National Treasure of Japan. At Kibitsujinja Shrine, the main shrine and the prayer hall were rebuilt in 1425; both are classified as examples of the Kibitsu-zukuri architectural style and designated National Treasures. A 360-meter-long historic corridor extends from the main shrine. The school and the shrine thus offer different reasons to explore preserved buildings and their individual features.

Preserved Townscapes and Traces Along the River

Copper-colored Sekishu roof tiles, red exterior walls and elaborately designed merchants’ houses shape the townscape of Fukiya Furusato Village. An activity program also puts the red color to practical use: visitors can decorate handkerchiefs and bags with red pigment. The townscape preservation district of Katsuyama offers a different impression. Old white-plastered storehouses and merchants’ houses with lattice windows have been preserved there; the area has been designated a townscape preservation district.

Katsuyama is also home to the remains of a boat landing along the Asahi River. They extend for about 700 meters and are thought to date back to the Muromachi period. The connection to the river is therefore part of local history, just like the preserved buildings. In Mankidō Cave, meanwhile, the Ryūgū Bridge and the rimstone formations of Senmaida are among the highlights. Historic townscapes, traces along the river and cave formations each offer a different focus.

Castle Ruins, Views and Tides

Two different perspectives are described for Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle. From the Fuigo Pass summit, it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the main keep. From the Unkai Viewpoint, the surviving castle keep and the two-story tower can be seen from mid-October to March, appearing to float above a sea of clouds. Seasonal viewing conditions can vary. The walking time and the view answer different planning questions: How much walking is involved from the pass, and when is the special view possible?

Another contrast can be found at the ruins of Bitchu-Takamatsu Castle, which have been landscaped as a park and invite visitors to stroll. Every year, lotus flowers bloom in mid-July in the castle moat, which covers about 4,000 square meters; the moat is approximately 7,000 square meters in total. The flowering date can vary. Visitors to the ruins can therefore choose between a stroll in the park and the seasonal view of the lotus flowers.

Kuroshima Venus Road is an approximately 800-meter-long sandbar that appears at low tide and connects three islands. Whether the route can be walked depends on the tides and transportation options. Kuroshima can be reached by shuttle boat from Hotel Limani, by sea kayak or by charter boat. Check transportation options before your trip. The tide-dependent Venus Road offers a different kind of discovery from the park landscape at Bitchu-Takamatsu Castle, which is described as available year-round.

Crafts, Fruit and Getting There

The Bizen Osafune Japanese Sword Museum focuses mainly on Bizen swords. At a workshop on the grounds, visitors can watch various sword-making processes. By contrast, the activity program at Fukiya Furusato Village offers a hands-on experience with red pigment. The two activities offer different insights: one into sword making, the other into decorating textiles and bags.

Fruit picking is also seasonal. At Ohara Tourist Orchard, peach, pear and apple picking is offered from early July to late November. At Tomomien, visitors can pick peaches and grapes in summer and autumn. Harvest periods depend on the type of fruit and the season; check the relevant dates if a particular fruit is important to your plans.

Okayama Prefecture can be reached by domestic flights to Okayama Momotaro Airport, regional trains from Osaka and long-distance bus services. As transport options and timetables can change, it is worth checking connections for your travel dates. When choosing a hotel, consider whether your trip will focus mainly on historic buildings, seasonal natural views, island paths or cultural experiences.
