For a trip focused on Agano, themes to explore include administrative history, Yasuda roof tiles, wetlands, mountain landscapes, and leisure activities. The Suibara Magistrate's Office and the adjacent Suibara Furusato Agricultural History Museum offer a tangible connection to the area’s culture. Other destinations also highlight craftsmanship, landscapes, and leisure. If you are looking for accommodation in Agano, it may help to first decide what you would like to focus on: history and craftsmanship, nature, or leisure.
History and Craftsmanship
In what is now Agano City, the Suibara Magistrate's Office was established in 1746 on the grounds of Suibara Castle, in an area under the direct control of the shogunate. Naitō Jūemon took office as its first magistrate. The office’s direct subordination to the shogunate defined its political and administrative framework. It ceased operations in 1868 after 123 years, and the building was reconstructed on August 25, 1995. The Suibara Furusato Agricultural History Museum is right next to the magistrate’s office. It introduces highlights of Agano City in three areas: culture, tourism, and industry. The history of a specific administrative office and a thematic overview of the city’s attractions are presented side by side.
The production of Yasuda roof tiles in the Aji district of the former Yasuda Town in Agano City dates back to the Tenpō era (1831–1845). Along Yasuda Tile Road, you can see works of art made from Yasuda roof tiles and a tile factory. At Niigata Kawara-kan Kawaratie, you can shape clay to make small oni roof tiles. The destinations offer different kinds of experiences: Tile Road focuses on the artworks and factory, while Kawaratie lets you shape small tiles. Check Kawaratie’s current opening hours and booking requirements before visiting.
Landscapes and Local Attractions
Gozu Sanroku Urara-no-mori comprises four facilities offering fresh produce for sale, tourist information at the foot of the Gozu Mountains, regional food culture, and tofu made from locally grown soybeans. This combination brings together visitor information, local products, and food culture. The tofu is made from locally grown soybeans.
The Gozu Mountains stretch along the border between Agano City and Aga Town. Lake Hyoko, in Agano City, is a wetland registered under the Ramsar Convention. The lake and the mountains represent different landscape features: a wetland with Ramsar status on the one hand, and a mountain range along a municipal border on the other.
Leisure and Getting Around
The extensive grounds of Suntopia World include around 29 different attractions, a botanical garden, and a campsite. This mix of activities differs from destinations focused on history or craftsmanship.
Agano City bus routes serve stops in front of Rhythm House “Hyoko,” “Lake of Swans Hyoko,” and the Suibara Magistrate's Office. If you plan to visit these destinations by bus, check the current timetable for your travel date before setting out.
