Discover Aga through Tsugawa, a destination with a special connection to river history, fox folklore, and scenic landscapes. The area’s former role as a transshipment hub, the grounds of Tsugawa Castle, and specific walking tours offer different ways to explore. For your plans, you can choose between exploring the history of the river port on foot, the Fox Wedding Procession, and the scenery at Kirinzan.
Tsugawa as a Historic River Port
During the Edo period, Tsugawa was the western gateway to the Aizu domain and an economically important transshipment hub for land and water transport. Up to 150 sailing ships called at the Ofunato (Ofunaba) landing, where 100 porters worked. Against this backdrop, Tsugawa was described as one of Japan’s three most important river ports. The description reflects the town’s significance at the time: land transport and shipping on the Agano converged here to transfer goods. Those interested in local history will find this a tangible way to explore the river’s former role and the routes through the Aizu domain.
Kirinzan and the Townscape
The grounds of Tsugawa Castle are now laid out as Kirinzan Park. The ruins lie at the tip of Shiroyama, a 140-meter-high ridge that projects like a peninsula at the confluence of the Agano and Tokonami rivers. From the former main castle grounds, where Kanagami Inari Shrine stands, the view takes in Tsugawa’s townscape and the Agano River. Here, the history of the castle grounds meets views of the riverside landscape.
Fox Legend and Procession
The Tsugawa Fox Wedding Procession is based on a fox-fire legend passed down locally and reenacts a nighttime wedding ceremony from the Edo period. During the procession, a bride in makeup walks through the streets of Tsugawa with about 108 attendants; the number may vary from year to year. The legend gives the event its local connection, while the reenacted ceremony provides its historical setting. Event dates are announced separately. If you want to time your trip to coincide with the festival, check the dates before making plans.
Explore Tsugawa on Foot
The guided walking tours each have a different focus: one covers Tsugawa’s past as a river port, another centers on food and narrow lanes, and a third follows the Kirinzan route. All three last about 1.5 to 2 hours. Reservations are generally required at least one week in advance. Since the tours are similar in length, the main consideration is whether you are interested in local history, lanes and food, or Kirinzan. Winter conditions may affect the Kirinzan route. Check the details in advance and book early.
Fox Wedding House and Local Specialties
Fox makeup is one of the activities available at Fox Wedding House; prices are 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children. Check availability and the current price before your visit. The second floor of Fox Wedding House offers views of the Agano River, the Tokonami River, and Kirinzan. Nearby, visitors can find local specialties as souvenirs and enjoy traditional dishes. Individual businesses and offerings may change, so check what is available.
