Komagane can be explored through several specific themes: the history and craft of silk, historic buildings, a route along the Kurokawa, the shopping street by the station, and a local katsudon specialty. When choosing Komagane for a stay, you can give these highlights different emphasis—such as culture and craft, an outdoor walk, or shopping and food.
Silk History and Craft
The Komagane Silk Museum in Higashi-Ina is part of the city’s cultural offerings. It provides comprehensive information about silk. Exhibits include a strikingly large silkworm model; the museum also presents the legacy of the Ryusui-sha cooperative spinning mill, which supported silkworm farming in Kamiina. Traditional equipment for silkworm farming and silk reeling introduces further stages of processing. An attached workshop offers hands-on activities where visitors can make various items from silk. The exhibition and making something yourself thus offer two distinct ways to engage with silk culture.
Historic Buildings and Collections
The Komagane Local Museum is housed in a rare Western-style building from the Taishō period, the former Komagane town hall. In the autumn of 1971, a representative section of the building was moved to its present location and preserved as a museum. It displays, among other things, folk cultural artifacts and hosts various events. Architecture, its former municipal use, and its function as a museum come together in this building.
Another historic architectural type is the former Takemura residence, with its thatched roof. It is considered a valuable example of the home of a wealthy farmer from the mid-Edo period. After it was designated an Important Cultural Property, Komagane City took over the house for preservation and moved it to its present location. The city therefore has both a building from the Taishō period and a residence from the mid-Edo period, each representing different historical and architectural themes.
The Omiya-Isuzu Shrine also preserves a piece of history: among its shrine treasures is a heavily damaged suit of armor from the Warring States period, considered a valuable testament to that era.
Station Shopping Streets and Local Cuisine
The shopping street by Komagane Station has shops and places to shop and eat. The area invites visitors to discover tucked-away shops in its lanes; it is also a good place for photos with a retro Shōwa-era feel. This brings together two specific activities: exploring the small lanes and taking a photographic stroll through the shopping street.
Komagane sauce katsudon is one of the city’s local specialties. The Komagane Sauce Katsudon Association has 35 restaurants and inns as members; they are committed to preserving the dish’s flavor. This specialty adds a distinctive note to local cuisine alongside the shopping opportunities around the station.
Routes along the Kurokawa and in the Surrounding Area
Komorebi no Michi runs for 1.7 kilometers alongside the Kurokawa. The loop starts at the tourist information center, passes the outdoor activity plaza and the Mars Whisky Distillery, and returns to the information center. In the wider region around Komagane is Senjojiki Cirque, a cirque formed by Ice Age ice on the way to Mount Kiso-Komagatake. There is a walking trail there that is suitable for a mountain hike. The suggested time frames provide a concrete comparison for planning: about 90 minutes at a leisurely pace for Komorebi no Michi and about 45 minutes for the loop at Senjojiki Cirque.
