Azumino offers two clear themes to help you plan your trip: cycling on established routes and activities on rivers. To decide what to focus on during your stay, you can first choose between a cycling route, a guided cycling tour, and a water experience. The specific offerings lead to different types of activities and place names, which can help you plan the rest of your trip.
Water Sites and River Experiences
The Azumino Wasabi Fields and Spring Water Group also provides a distinct connection to the water theme: it is recognized by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment as one of Japan’s “100 Famous Water Sites.” There are several specific options for river activities. Canoeing and SUP experiences are offered on the Maekawa in Akashina, while clear-boat experiences are available on the Tatekawa in Hotaka. Rafting is offered on the Mansui River, the Sai River, and other rivers. When making your choice, you can consider the type of activity and the place name together: canoeing and SUP are on the Maekawa, clear boating is on the Tatekawa, and rafting is available on several rivers. This makes it clear which type of water experience you have in mind and which place it is associated with.
Cycling Through Hotaka
The city of Azumino has established three cycling routes where everyone can ride safely and enjoyably. The A Course of the Azumino Cycling Courses is a particularly specific option. It follows the Azumino Yamabiko Cycling Path through Hotaka, offering views of wasabi fields and the Northern Alps, as well as the beautiful scenery at Sekikoseki, which is recognized as a World Heritage Site for its irrigation facilities. The A Course can therefore be understood in terms of both its route and the landscape features mentioned: Hotaka describes the route, while the fields, the Northern Alps, and Sekikoseki shape the views. Guided cycling tours are also offered in Azumino. This is another way to enjoy the cycling theme, in addition to the three established routes.
Choose a Focus for Your Trip
Cycling and water activities differ not only in the activity itself but also in how you can plan around them: the A Course centers on a specific route through Hotaka with scenic views, while the river activities identify the activities and waterways involved. If you are planning a trip with limited time, choose a main theme first. For a longer stay, you can add other interests without assuming a set order for visiting places before you make your choices.
If cycling is the deciding factor, use the three routes established by the city, the A Course, and the guided cycling tours on offer as starting points for planning your trip. If you are interested in the water, you can first choose the activity you want and the river associated with it.
