Getting Around Kinosaki by Bus

Two Ōsato community bus routes stop at Kinosaki Branch Hall: Ōmatsuzawa–Nakamura and Kasukawa–Ōmatsuzawa. Their shared stop is a useful landmark when planning a trip to Kinosaki; the route names help distinguish between the two routes. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for the day of your visit.

Parks and Seasons in the Municipality

The municipality that Kinosaki belongs to has several parks, each with a different landscape. Tsukidate Park sits on a steep hill and offers sweeping views of the rural landscape. In spring, cherry blossoms and rapeseed blossoms bloom side by side. Hanadate Park is on a peak with cherry trees; hydrangeas and azaleas are among the flowers that bloom there in different seasons. It is also a popular cherry blossom viewing spot in spring. The elevated Ōkubō Castle Ruins Park is known for its autumn colors, with views across the rural landscape of Ōsato. For a seasonal comparison, the blossoms at Tsukidate and Hanadate contrast with the autumn foliage at Ōkubō; the two spring destinations also differ, with cherry and rapeseed blossoms together at Tsukidate and a focus on cherry blossoms at Hanadate.

History and Memorial Sites

Ōkubō Castle in the municipality was the residence of the Ōmatsuzawa (Miyazawa) clan, who lived there until the Meiji period. An inscription on the roof of Kashima Shrine in the municipality bears the year 1533; the shrine is said to have been founded about 500 years ago. According to tradition, it was built to pray for victory in war and for the protection of Ōkubō Castle. At the summit of Seigamori Park in the municipality stands a memorial stone bearing a poem by haiku poet Midorijo Abe.

The municipality’s memorial sites include Hasekura Tsunenaga Memorial Park in Ōsato, which was developed around the approach to Hasekura Tsunenaga’s grave. The tomb, located in the municipality and inscribed with “梅安清公禅定門 支倉氏,” is attributed to Hasekura Tsunenaga and visited by people from Miyagi Prefecture and across Japan. Another local tradition concerns Yatate Shrine in the municipality: Sakanoue no Tamuramaro is said to have had a deity enshrined in 807 at the spot where an arrow he shot during a stay fell. This is considered the origin of the shrine.

Traditional Practices

Miyabayashi Kagura is part of the municipality’s cultural heritage. The tradition combines elements of Yamabushi Kagura with legends and stories, and includes original additions. It is also known as Nanbu Kagura Miwa-ryū and Juniban Kagura. It was passed down and performed in Dobashi in the municipality as the kagura of Niwatari Shrine by the shrine’s priests and attendants. For a long time, it remained largely closed to outsiders. When Niwatari Shrine in the municipality was merged into Shinmei Shrine in Nakamura in Meiji 41 (1908), the tradition was also shared with the general public. Another annual custom in the municipality is the Hanyu rice-planting dance, performed at the Tenjin Shrine’s sacrificial ceremony for the old New Year.
