For a trip to Kurihara, nature and culture can be explored through specific themes: hiking on Mount Kurikoma, railway history at the Kuriden Museum, and the waterbird life at Lake Izunuma. Hiking and museum facilities, as well as the Sanctuary Center, are located within the respective municipality; summit panoramas and a traverse belong to the wider regional area.

Hiking on Mount Kurikoma

You can hike and trek on Mount Kurikoma from spring through autumn. The Iwakagamidaira trailhead has a parking lot and a rest house; there are also nine trails for different experience levels. Conditions can vary by season, so check them before setting out.

At 1,626 meters high, Mount Kurikoma is a cone-shaped volcano spanning Miyagi, Iwate, and Akita prefectures. From the summit, you can see Mount Gassan, Mount Chōkai, the Zao Mountains, Mount Akita-Komagatake, and Mount Hayachine; the Pacific Ocean is also visible in the distance. The panorama therefore combines views of named mountains and ranges with a view reaching as far as the Pacific.

In the wider region, a traverse runs from Iwakagamidaira via the Higashi-Kurikoma Trail to the summit, then descends to Sukawa Onsen via the Sukawa Trail. The start and finish are in different places. Plan the described route as a traverse, not as a return to the starting point.

Railway History at the Kuriden Museum

In Wakayanagi, the Kuriden Museum displays vehicles from the Kurihara Den'en Railway, which closed in 2007, that you can view and touch. Another way to experience railway history is the KD12 driving simulator, which uses an original driver's cab. You can sit in the cab, operate the brake handle and levers, and sound the Kuriden horn. The vehicles themselves and trying out the simulator controls offer two distinct museum experiences.

Waterbirds and Nature at Lake Izunuma

The Miyagi Izunuma-Uchinuma Sanctuary Center is located in the relevant municipality at Lake Izunuma. The lake is known as a resting area for swans and other waterbirds; the Center's exhibits focus on its natural environment. A program description also mentions nature-experience courses in the Izunuma and Uchinuma area, held approximately once a month. If you would like to take part in a course, check the current date.

Iwana Farming and Char Dishes

Iwana farming in Kurihara City began in 1968 with Kazuo Kazumata's initiative to revitalize the region, and continues to this day. A 2023-updated article describes Sadawo Kazumata and his wife as second-generation operators of 岩魚の館 in the relevant municipality. The article mentions char dishes served there and Sadawo's involvement in managing the fish farm. If you would like to eat there, check in advance whether it is currently open.
