Himeji offers different ways to explore culture and history. Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle, is a Japanese National Treasure and a World Heritage Site. Koko-en brings nine gardens with distinct designs into view; the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History complements this focus with a building whose glass façade reflects the castle. Alongside the castle, you will find a garden featuring historic layouts and a museum with a permanent exhibition and distinctive architecture. When planning an overnight stay in Himeji, the route from the station to the castle is another practical starting point, alongside these interests.

Getting to Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is one kilometer along Otemae-dori from the north exit of Himeji Station. The walk takes 15 to 20 minutes; by bus, it takes five minutes. This lets you compare the two modes of transport and their stated travel times directly. Routes and travel times may change; check the latest information before departure.

Koko-en: Gardens with Historic Layouts

Koko-en borders Himeji Castle and offers its own perspective on the history of the area. The gardens follow layouts identified through excavations at the former western residence of Himeji Castle, samurai residences and paths. On this basis, nine gardens with distinct designs have been created. The variety of source layouts draws attention both to the garden styles and to the earlier uses underlying them. Those interested in garden design will find a different focus here than at the castle itself: rather than a single layout defining the grounds, several distinct historical references shape them.

Souju-an, a teahouse built in the Sukiya-zukuri style, is located in Koko-en’s tea garden. Matcha is served there; a session costs 700 yen. This connects the garden design with a specific culinary offering. Services and prices may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Architecture and Exhibitions at the History Museum

At the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History, the building and the exhibition offer different perspectives. The building was designed based on a concept by Kenzo Tange; Himeji Castle is reflected in its glass façade. This architectural connection creates a distinct point of interest alongside Koko-en’s historic layouts. The permanent exhibition includes “Minna no Ie” in the free-access area on the first floor, featuring, among other things, an AR fitting or AR clothing experience. This places the building’s design and a specific part of the exhibition side by side as different points of interest. Exhibition details may change; check them before your visit.
